Header Warpage please help

I've got a set of hedman shorty hedders and I've checked the flanges with a straight edge and noticed that they are warped slightly at the corners. What is the maximum limit I can get by with without leaks. Can I have these machined to make the ports true or what's the deal. Really wanna get these suckers on before winter rolls in. I've got gaskets and Copper RTV gasket maker, I just hate exhaust leaks.

Any recommendations fella's?

Alright I guess I'll just throw them on because no one will answer so know one must know. They are about 1-2 mm warped. I don't think that's that bad.

i would have them machined if i were you. to me any warpage is to much warpage. they can get them down staight and you'll feel better about it, also that won't be the cause of any leaks. Sorry about not answering earlier for you. i never saw this thread. i'm always on the exaust forum all the time. Anyways my vote is have then machined.

Thanks aaron. Hey we both have the same name...weird.

If they are machined does that mean that they are more prone to future warps because of the reduce flange thickness?

Potentially, there will be less material there to maintain rigidity. I'd do as the other Aaron says and machine it as little as possible to make it "true." Then just use high grade gaskets all around and you ought to be exhaust-leak free.

Oh, and just check your bolts for tightness regularly. That can contribute some to warpage on headers as well. Maybe use some sort of locking bolt. I don't know if you can use the nylock bolts on a header (heat...nylon melts...?) but somthing like that may be handy. I'd want to keep an investment like that safe.

You HAVE to let us know if you see performance gains from the shorty's...as well as sound difference (sound = more important ).

yeah i had to do this on some manifolds on my boat. 460 marine. it worked greatly. the guy before me ran them with bolts missing. what an idiot. just as Saurian said i just purchased some good quality gaskets, had them machined just a little bit and they're leak free. Let us know how it turns out.

I don't see the sense in using anything but the best grade gasket you can use on things automotive. You'll just have to tear it apart later on if it doesn't work out. Big PITA.

How does fitment look for the headers? Also..for the Hornies, would you be getting the header glasspacks or the regular slipfit glasspacks? It'd be awesome to try out the header-attaching ones.

Saurian,

I think I am going to have a shop install these, just because it's cold out and there is alot of snow and I don't know how hard it would be. I am thinking that they will work out good if I get them machined. I have all the parts and I'm ready to go to my mechanic I just need to have them machined. I have painted them with silver high heat header paint so I should expect they will look nice for the first month until the paint burns off. The paint after being cured in the oven is good for 1400* F, my mom spazzed cause it stunk so bad in the kitchen. I would think the paint would stick around it being colder out and such.

But I will definetly be taking some pictures. Maybe at the shop I'll snap a few for ya's. Thanks for all your help, and another thing what's the typical cost for having them machined?

I'd buy the regular slip fit hornies, just because my existing exhaust is a year old. I love the sound of them.
