what is max safe egt?

What is the maximum safe egt? (pre-turbo probe)
I just installed my guages today and was suprised to see the egt climb to 1400 very quickly. The truck hadn't even shifted from 2nd to 3rd! It drops right off when I let off the accelerator.
Is this too hot? Any way to get it lower? I can't even punch it w/out it climbing so high.
Setup is: predator at 60hp, Tymar intake, Magnaflow turbo back exhaust (3 1/2" dp, 4" pipe)

ford rates it at 1050* sustained max, and 1250* max peak

Yea 1250* is about what you want to keep it under for any length of time. You can go higher for very short periods of time because it takes time for heat to build up in the pistons, but basically - it's just asking for problems. Keep it at, or under, 1250 and you are all set to go!!

Just got back from a 100 mile round trip drive. Looks like its staying around 800 when cruising 75 on the interstate, so I guess that is fine. It just flys up fast when accelerating even moderately.
Would the wastegate bypass mod lower the egt's? How would that effect mileage?

Waste gate mod decreased my egt's under hard pulls on average 100 degrees. Seems to have increased millage. I did the mod at half tank, waiting for next fillup to check. More boost = more power, less throttle = better milage.

1250, yeah right! Have you ever seen a truck blow something @ 1250?? I have sustained 1400 for maybe 30 seconds and have peeked at 1500. Truck has over 120,000 miles and still runs great. I have had many talks with big name diesel performance shops and they laugh at the usual 1300 safe point. They have never had problems with 1300, and never seen it. I ask this, have you really seen a powerstoke 'blow it's heads' going over 1250??? I and many others must have lucky heads then

If I just unhook the wastegate, won't the truck stop itself from overboosting?
I thought I read that somewhere on here.

Anyway, I did unhook the wastegate and the boost jumps up very fast (20-25 before I let off), but the egt's stay considerably lower with my foot in the throttle (under 1150) and it stays under 800 while towing the trailer - I put the predator in tow mode after loading trailer.
I didn't dare just hold the foot to the floor to see if it would overboost or not - guess that would be a potentially expensive test...

the whole boost vs. EGT vs speed is kind of a "dance on the fence". you can pulling a hill with a load, be in 4th gear, have your foot way in the throttle, pulling 17 psi at 2000 rpm and have an EGT of 1200*. then you drop it into 3rd the boost goes to 24psi the speed stays the same, rpms go to 2800 and the EGT drops to 1050*...what??? when you get to the limit of things sometimes more boost and higher rpms will lower the EGT because with the increased boost, more air is moving through the engine and taking the hot exhaust out faster...trust me, i do it all the time

Pyrometer.... ?

I'm a new owner on an older truck. An F-250 7.3LPSD, this truck is equipped with the SuperTuner module (and yes, I did get the tunner computer as well). I used to drive tractor/trailer rigs, and USUALLY had a pyrometer -this truck does not. I didn't even think much about it until I started reading this thread, and it makes sense that the 'tuner would raise the temp. So my question isn't so much wheather I SHOULD or not, but more along the lines of HOW and what one do y'all recommend? I'd expect a pyro that didn't fit in the dash (as there is no evident place for it) so I'll probably stick it under the dash -anywhere I don't have to go modifying the dashboard (the interior of this Lariat is in very good condition, and I don't want to "junk it up" ).
Any advice would be helpful!
Thanks
-NB

autometer "Z" series is a great gauge and it matches the factory gauges well, if you tow i would also reccomend at least a trans temp gauge, and while you are at it you might as well get the boost gauge(do i sound like a salesman?). when towing you can work the boost and egt together, they go hand in hand

Ok, I'm sold! Does the same manuf. make the other guages as well (tranny temp and boost ?) are they (relatively) easy to install? I can do basic stuff, of course, but I'm just trying to keep from doing any major modifications. This baby must last me for a good number of years, and yes, it will be towing, so the advice you gave is one I take to heart -I'm not used to automatics -always driven manuals, but this beast was used and you get what the owner had)

Not only do they make the gauges they make a neat A-pillar mounting pod, mounts verticaly on the piller between door and windshield, so you dont have to carve up your dash
Autometer is not they only choice Isspro is also available and several others.
The sponsores of this site will be glad to help just click on the word gauge and follow the links

Sweet! I'll do that. I like the idea of an A-post guage rack.

and now that I'm typing this, I see an ad for ISSPRO guages flashing up in the banner.
Much abliged. Hope its not too difficult to route and hook up this stuff. I'm wondering (before actually going there) if they have whole kits for each guage (the sensor, mount, etc etc) or do I have to buy each individual part (the pyro sensor, the air-flow meter sensor, etc -and for that matter, where do I learn about these things?)
Thanks!
