Looking for a little clarification guys.......
GL-5 differential fluid already has the limited slip additive...therefore no l/s additive needed? Right?
Thanks.
I don't think so. GL-5 should only refer to the level of anti-wear, extreme pressure additives, not whether it is limited slip. I believe you need either a special limited slip gear lube or an additive. That's my guess anyway.
Not counting the synthetics......Chevron and Shell both offer a gear oil with the LS additive package already in place.
The only two designations are GL-5 and MT-1.
I guess there is no actual official designation to seperate the LS from the non-LS packages.
Ford recommends using LS lube with Motorcraft Synthetic gear oil. I wasn't aware some synthetics had it already in there. Does Chevron and Shell mark the container as having LS additive built in?
The way to tell if you need LS additive is, IF it chatters on slow tight turns, especially in reverse, you need to add LS additive. On my 94 F250 4x4 with 4.10 gears, I add two 8oz tubes of Sta Lube LS Additive to Valvoline syn.
On my chebby Impala SS I use 2 tubes of LS Additive with M1 syn. Impala member's experience is with 1 tube and syn it will chatter.
Most Redline gear oils have the additive already in there and it really works. Mobil One and Valvoline synthetic gear oils claim to have it, but I still got chatter. No chatter with the Redline. Not needing the additive made up for the cost difference.
Yes, Chevron and Shell both have LS in the names.
Have a Chevron distributor in town.....gonna give em call in the mornin, see if ican get the stuff in less than a drum.
