I am messing with my 351M equipped '79 Bronco. This thing runs like crap, backfires all of the time, and won't idle, regardless of the temperature. My uncle looked at it and told me that the EGR valve wasn't working. Since my truck is smog-exempt where I live and a new EGR cost about $70, can I take the EGR valve and the spacer plate it bolts to, off of the engine, and just mount the carb on the intake manifold to cure the problems without doing damage to my engine? I heard that if the EGR is removed from an engine, it would cause major damage. Is this true? I'm just trying to fix the problems with as little cost as possible because I'm about to install a 4-barrel intake soon, and it doesn't have provisions for an EGR. Right now, I just need it to run right so I can drive it. Thanks for any help.
yes you can remove the egr, i have and it still runs fine, you may need to play with the carb to get it to run right. also the egr wont cause backfiring so check the timing.the timing chain may have skipped a tooth.
is it backfiring through the carb or exhaust?
I don't know much about gas engines but I think it's the carb. It shoots flames out of it when I have it running without the air filter and I open and release the throttle. Sometimes it sounds like a gun shooting too but I don't know if it's the carb or exhaust. And I hope it isn't the timing chain because it only has 107,000 miles. How do I check to see if it has skipped?
Your egr spacer plate is probably burned out. Their made of cheep pot metal. They have a lot of different ones & it's alwats a pain to find the right gasket. If you do remove it I would plug the hole in the intake with a freeze plug.
I guess I'll go on and replace the timing chain since I have to take much of the engine apart to replace a bunch of gaskets and install the aftermarket intake manifold. Since I don't want a cheap one from the local parts store, who makes the best timing chain set for the money? What else should I replace on this engine at this mileage? Thanks.
You want a good double roller timing chain. Also you want one that will allow you to set the cam timing to zero degrees or 'straight up'. The factory chain is 4 degrees retarded.
Cloyes makes a good one.
