Air in cooling system -- need method to remove

'94 Ranger 2WD, 3.0 V6, 5 sp. manual. 80k miles

I'm looking for a "tried and true" method of purging air from this engine's cooling system, which (obviously) does not have a bleed screw. Would appreciate step-by-step instructions, if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Air in cooling system -- need method to remove

Had this problem on my 86 2.8. How I eliminated the air was to top off the radiator while cold, then start the engine with the cap off, idle til the thermostat opened. When the thermostat opened, the coolant level dropped and I was able to add about 3/4 gallon of coolant. Runs nice and cool now.

Engine warm, open the radiator cap, start engine...and fill. Worked for me.
If it's a recurrent problem, you might want to check your water pump.

I have the same truck as you and I was wondering how do you know there is air in your cooling system. I just changed the coolant in my truck and was wondering if that is what mine needs because since I changed the coolant, After running for awhile I noticed that i now have a leak where the overflow tube connects to the overflow bottle. It never did this before. thanks Bob

Bob,

I doubt if you have an air problem. Rather, it sounds like the hose itself -- you can only detach/re-attach that overflow hose so many times. Since this has also happened to me, try this: Trim the hose back about an inch, then re-attach. Or, you can put a little clamp on if you want (gently!). Of course, you could also replace the hose, but I had trouble finding it at the local parts stores.
