crossmember problem

Hi all I have a 1978 ford f-100 which came with a wore out 302. We changed it out for a 351 windsor but the original tranny went out and now we are replacing it with the original tranny that came with the 351. My problem is there is a front crossmember which wont allow the tranny to drop. I have never encountered this before and would like to know the crossmembers purpose on the truck. Is it some type of support for the frame as the tranny doesn't touch or bolt to this piece at all. Any info will be appreciated.

This crossmember ties the cabmounts and radius arms together. It is unboltable, but I would advise against that as it can be a real PITA to get those bolts back in. You can get the tranny out with the crossmember still in, just be slow and careful, move the tranny towards the rear of the truck as you lower it, and you'll clear just fine.
