I have a 1973 f100, pretty good shape. it is a ranger, came with a 302, and a cruiseomatic 3 speed tranny, i bought a 83 ford van, for the motor, which is a jasper 351w, and a c-6 tranny to replace, my wore out motor, i got the motor in sitting on the mounts, it appears as if the crossmember is back to far to line up with the holes in the frame, i have trans bolted to the crossmember, but the crossmember will not bolt up to the original holes. does anybody have any tips on what will work, or what i need to make this work, also will the driveshaft fit?, if there is anything else i need to know for this conversion, thanks
drill new holes as previously mentioned. Expect to have to get creative with your shifter linkage. Your driveshaft may need to be shortened, and you more than likely will need to change out the yoke to make it the C6. Look in the phone book for a driveline shop. They will tell you how to properly measure what you have so they can get your shaft built correctly. Prior to taking it in, install new U-joints. If you don't, they cannot properly balance your driveshaft.
When I did mine I did not have to shorten my driveshaft, but might be different in your case. Masterbeavis makes a good point about the shifter linkage too. How far back did the bolt holes change?
HI. I have found your info. to be very helpful, and thank you for the input. I have not yet got to the crossmember as I have another problem. When I got the engine sat on the mounts, it looks to be sitting in at and angel. From under the truck the trans apears to be pointing to the left more than it should. The trans mount holes will not line up with the trans holes, needs to go to the right about 1'' or so but is in a bind , nothing touching, just won't move enough to fit, engine mounts keep it from moving. Don't know if frame brackets are wrong or what is going on. took brackets lose from frame, bolted to engine mounts, set engine back down, looks good now, trans lines up,crossmember bolts up to secondary holes in frame, frame brackets don't line up with holes now, but engine looks good wondering if I should redrill holes for brackets and be done with it? thanks.
I wouldn't re-drill the holes for motor mounts. Pictures would be good. Stupid question maybe. But is the trans mount the right way? I seem to remember mine not fitting right the first time, and i had to flip mount I think (been awhile since I did it), but mine is a 3spd. not a C6 so it could be different. I think the engine mounts should be same for 302 and 351W so you probably have the right mounts if they were right for the 302.
73 Short bed, I have a 73 short bed also. I have had a 240, 302, 390, and currently have a 460 in mine. I have also had a 3 speed, a 4 speed, and a c6 in it. All of the swaps were "bolt in's" with the right combination of parts. If your holes aren't lining up, something is wrong.
If the engine mounts that you have are truly for a factory 302 truck, then you should be able to bolt the following engines right in to place: 289, 302, 351W, 351C, 351M, and 400.
I've got to go to work now, but I'll post more later on a successfull engine swap.
Doc
Well my trans holes didnt line up because there are 3-speeds with different tailshaft lengths. 30 seconds with a drill solved that problem. As far as the original poster he may have other issues.
