Hi, my stock speakers in my '01 Explorer sport are completely blown out, not all 4, but 2 of them. I need to get replacements, what is the best brand for me to get in terms of speakers like that...and should I use the stock Head unit, or buy a new one, and if so, which?
everyone has got thier favorite brands. I went pioneer all aroudn in my truck. new headunit is a good idea if you plan on puttin anything else in. you can run the stock headunit but i would just go ahead and do the upgrade while i was doing everything else.if you want max sound get a amp and run the speakers off of that. but if you do that you will need the rca's on a new headunit.
There is a way to not runs amps of a factory deck, I've seen it done, but don't know how to do it. Some good brands to go with for speakers:
-Rockford Fosgate (my brand of choice)
-Pioneer
-Kicker
-Blaupunkt
Not so good:
-Kenwood
-Sony
Those are the ones I like and dislike, but others are good too.
For a deck:
-Pioneer/Premier
-JVC
-Rockford Fosgate
-Kenwoods are okay
Not necessarily. You can use a line out convertor to hook up external amps to a factory head unit that lacks RCA outputs. However, as you suggested, the best route in terms of sound quality and flexibility would be to get an aftermarket HU with RCA preamp outputs.
Thanks to everyone who has replied. The info is useful. I am planning on getting some money together to buy a whole new system, no subs though, I just want to replace my stock HU, my stock speakers, and have them run through an amp to power them better. I want to get this done at the local bestbuy, which is only a few minutes away from my house. I trust they will do a great job. One thing is that I already have plenty running off my battery, such as a cb radio, and big *** foglights. Would this hinder the ability of my amp to perform, or the speakers to sound good, because I don't want my lights flickering while I listen to music. My friend had that problem and bought an optima.
I doubt your battery will drain from an amp just drawing power for speakers. It only takes as much wattage as it needs, unless you have your music turned all the way up the whole time, you shouldn't have any problems at all. A capacitator will not help in this case, as a matter of fact they don't help in many cases. Don't worry about the CB, it dosn't take much power, and the foglights, will take a little but your alternator should keep you in the good.
My brand of choice: Kenwood(508S) with a cd unit undernieth. They both fit nicely into the factory radio location of my 00' explorer. Speakers: Boston Acoustics(front) Kenwoods(rear). Sub/amp combo in the rear cargo area(Kenwood 8") tube shape. Also Ham Radio installed. All of this is hooked up to a Red Optima battery with the stock alternator.
I'm not a big Kenwood fan for car audio. Pioneer has some good HU's and so does Alpine. Depends on what your styling needs are. I have a question.. where do you find Boston Acoustics car speakers?

Did you read the part about him blowing out some of his stock speakers...?
Agreed about the stiffening cap -- they're a waste of money most of the time.
