on my 84 f-150 4x4 300-6 4 spd, i apparently have two sending units for the temperature....one tells the computer my engine temp, and one tells my temp gauge the temp...my problem is that i don't know which one is which....and i'm not wanting to tear my wiring harness apart to find out.......any ideas??? thanks...
Well, take the lead off one of them, and start the engine and run till warm -- or better still, run till warm and just pull the lead and turn on the switch and don't even start it. If you pull the lead that goes to the guage, it will go down -- the guages are still basically ohm/resistance driven -- the higher the temp, the less resistance in the sender and more current flowing. Pulling the lead to the guage sends the resistance to infinity. Then, as a final test, ground the lead for the guage for a bit and see if the guage heads to hot.
Now -- its possible if you choose wrong your computer will not like that last part of gounding, so do that only after you think you have it correct.
On my '87 F15, 2x2, 300cid/4.9l, 4-speed, the temperature sensor that runs the dash guage is located on the head close to the rear on the passenger side. There's a single wire going to it. You can pull this lead and ground it, and the guage should go to max.
There's also a temperature sender very near to the water thermostat housing (slightly off center toward the passenger side, right up front just behind the fan). The lead for this one goes to the Engine Control Module (ECM).
