86 Ranger 4x
I cannot get anything out of the 4x when I try to engage it.
it has a 4x4 button and a low range button.
I looked through the Haynes manual that I have but it is useless
there is no troubleshooting in it on the Auto touch system just how
to take it apart and a wiring diagram. I just bought the truck a week ago. So I am not sure where to begin. according to the book if I read correctly, it has electric shift control. I looked under the truck at the T.C. and it has a what looks like a moter and wiring.
Any Ideas on where to begin would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Check the 4x4 fuse in the fuse panel (don't remeber if it's in the cab or under hood, or both..)
or
The contacts on the transfer case motor are prolly coroded....
alcohol, q-tips, will be needed to clean them.
once both ends of connection are cleaned use some conatct grease on the connections.
or
If the above doesnt work, the transfer case motor is probably shot.

In the electrical diagram it shows a 40 amp fuse,
But there is no 40 amp fuse in the fuse box underneath
the steering column, and the little diagram on the
panel cover for the fuse box does not list one. and the fact
that I do not have the original owners manual for the truck
I have no clue as to were it goes. So if this is an external
fuse I can't find that either. So I am still puzzled on this
I did check continuity on the button controls and that is OK
the buttons are working but that is all I can verify.
Thanks David
on your stx?
Also what is your rpm's at 55/65mph I am running 2600
at 55mph of course it has the 4 speed auto in it.
One thing though is that the overdrive does not kick in until around
48mph unless I let off of the gas then it will kick in at 45. Which is kind of a real pain if you are in slow but steady traffic.
Thanks
David
