I have a 2000 Ford 4x4 off road stepside. I just got out of the shop for a sick transmission. This truck has 35000 miles and never been off of the road has had the fluid changed at 18000, and never has been abused. Infact I keep all of the fluids changed more often than I am supposed to. Does Ford have a problem with there Ranger Auto Transmission.
I'd have to say you unfortunately got a bad one out of the factory. Your tranny (5R55E) is the same one that I have in my Ranger, and I haven't had any problems with it [knocks on wood]. This tranny is also used in many similar-year 4.0L Explorers, so there is a lot of them out there on the road. From what I've read and heard, the Explorer owners seemto have more problems with them, but that's not to say the tranny is prone to failure.
Shifts hard in 2nd gear. It started out with low idle speed and I change the sensor on the throttle body and the idle speed cleared up but the transmission still hit hard in 2nd gear. I wonder if the computer that controls the shift points is causing this problem.
I would say it is probably still in the valve body. On my 2001 4+4 they had to change the separator plate and some other parts of a [kit] they had to put in it. About $479 worth. 62000k on it.
I just had the valve bodies replaced in my 2000 4.0 at 70K miles. If you search here you will find a number of people with similar problems with these transmissions.
I was told by a trany company that it was a servo caused by the converter being to close to the trany. Ford should really think to put a better heat shield between the too. This truck has only 35000 and he said that worst case would be 450$. The Ford dealership that I bought the truck from gave me a quote of 1200$ to 2500$ for a new trany.
had the service done - 400 later. the tranny shop installed a new (revised) valve body gasket. the pre 2001 have a tendency to blow out the gasket around the solenoid.
I got the transmission fixed and they replaced the 2 nd gear solenoid and the trucks shifts good. The total price was $288.00. This is a saving of almost $1000 from what the dealer wanted. O'Neal's Transmission Service of Clinton In. did the work and it was done very well. All is good now and the truck runs well. The moral of the story don't always go to the dealer.
