I've got an '84 F-150 4x4 300-6, noticed today that the five clearance lights on top of the cab werent on with my headlights, checked all the fuses, everythings good there, brake/head/reverse/turn/warning lights all work. pulled a buld from the clearance lights and not getting any power up there, does anyone know how these things are wired? where the wires run so that i can start tracing a break in the system. They look to be all connected between the sheet metal in the roof, but from there i dont have the foggiest where the wires head. Any insight woudl be greatly appreciated.
I had a similar problem on my '77. I removed the headliner and what had happened was that the previous owner in an attempt to change the bulbs or something had pulled all the pigtails from the lights out of the main harness. Once I plugged them back in and installed new bulbs they worked. As far as getting to the wiring you will have to remove the headliner and then the wiring ran along the front of the cab and down the left side windshield pillar.
I am not sure where the wires run. On my 80, I have some wires running up the cab corner on the driver's side. I have a map light, interior light, and a rear outside cab light that these feed, and I assumed my cab marker light wiring was there too. It's going to be a dark brown wire wherever it comes from.
I do know I had a problem with these wires down near the rear floor. My cab had leaks in the rear corners, caused by the putty cracking open on the drip rail above the door. This caused many problems in the rear cab corners, including corroding some of the wiring.
And also I do know on my 80, to change the bulbs, you take the complete light assembly off the top of the cab from the outside. Then you turn the assembly over, and the socket is a twist-lock affair that comes out of the bottom so you can change the bulb.
The wiring should run from the lights, down the left A pillar (beween door and windshield). There should be a hole in the metal just behind the headlight switch where the wiring will come out and plug into the dash wiring harness. Find the wires and check for power.
Well, i guess I will go tearing into that section around the dash and A pillar, hopefully i can find a break or something in there. Like i said, all the fuses are good and getting power to each one, but no power at the top clearance lights...so there are only so many places the problem could be.
Thanks again.
