AOD transmission HELP

1990 Bronco with 5.0 FI engine and AOD transmission. Transmission just started slipping when in overdrive. Seems to shift OK 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and doesn't slip. Now when I put it in overdrive I noticed it rev up so obviously I don't put the shifter in overdrive anymore. If I do put it overdrive from a stop everything works OK and it shifts thru all of the gears but of course when it shifts into OD and I step on it, it will slip. What do you think, clutches? Any of you average mechanics rebuild your own transmissions? I've rebuilt dozens of car, truck, Harley, equipment, mower, etc., engines, manual transmissions from all types of things, and repaired just about anything and everything but I've never tried to rebuild an automatic transmission. In automatics I've changed the valve body, installed shift kits, fixed the band when it fell off of my F250 C6 etc., but never actually disassembled one. Any suggestions on parts or specialized tools I may need. Or should I just use common sense and take it to someone that knows what they are doing? Of course this last option is about $1000 beyond my budget.

I've thought about rebuilding my AOD in my 86, but so far I think I got it adjusted to where I can last a bit longer. Maybe it's just out of adjustment. I fiddled with the TV cable(?) on the throttle body and it really seemed to tighten everything up. Maybe, hopefully, that's what's going on with yours.

Here is a quick tip for the old AOD users. Keep it out of OD under 55mph to extend the life of you AOD. The OD is just a metal band with brake lining material. It locks up one of your drive drums and through the planetary set-up reduces your gear ratio of the tranny dropping your rpms. Under 55mph your tranny is not creating enough line pressure to completely lock the OD band and is constantly slipping wearing away the brake material(kinda like riding the clutch) and over time does take years off the tranny's life.

Go buy 2 qts. of Lucas Transmission Fix and drain the same amount out of your tranny and see what happens. Mine has not sliped in almost 80,000 miles since I added it to mine. Cheap insurance if it works and if it doesn't, not much spent trying. Check it out on lucasoil.com but buy it from most auto parts stores.

Good luck,

I had a Jimmy that I used the lucas stuff in and it worked great! It also helps with ps units. By the way, my 500th post!

i would service the tranny with new fluid and filter and use some of that lucas stuff. figure about a grand for a rebuilt tranny. I know of one that is awesome but will run ya $1400 but its built has stronger gears and would help wake that little 302 big time. if your interested let me know an ill post the link.
