How to check cab mounts

Can someone tell me exactly where on a 1978 F150 Supercab 4x4 I would be able to check them mounts for the cab, where the top of the bolts are?

I'm hearing popping noises when the body articulates in a turn, or a curve, and am concerned the cab mounts are pulling through. Don't want to find out by the cab rolling off.....

I can see the mounts from underneath, of course, but I can't figure out where to see the top of the mounts at.

thx

Not sure on the supercab, but on the standard cab the front ones have a cover plate on the firewall to hide the bolts. The rear ones are under the carpet. There's a hole in the floor and it might have duct tape over it like mine did.

Again, this is for a regular cab, but yours might be the same.

check behind the seat in the rear and under the back of the front seats there should be some rubber plugs in the floor. you should be able to access the bolts from there. you can also look around in there with a flashlight.

On the front driver side, the cab mount is almost even with the high beam switch in the floor, but I don't see any access panel.

The plate that is on your firewall, is it removable?

Yes it's removable.

If you look at the body mount from the wheel well you should see the plate. It's held on with a single sheet metal screw and may have a 1/2" dia. hole in it with a vent hose stuck in it. You might have to take the plastic wheel well liner off to see it though.

Mine was covered with dirt and gunk and I never saw it until I cleaned the area off. The plate is just a piece of sheet metal and it's kinda egg-shaped.

This picture isn't that clear but it shows the location of the plate.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I'll check for the panel this afternoon.

If I have trouble finding it, can you email that pic to me? It doesnt seem to come up in the forum for me.

That popping noise that you are hearing while turning may be bad universals in the front axle. Just a thought. Something a little easier to ck. first!

just my oppinion but the easiest way to check if they are pulling through is to take a bottle jack and lift up on the cab at the corners. position the jack so the plate contacts the seam weld. if they are good the frame should lift with the body. if they are bad youll start to see a gap between the body and the rubber bushing. but on anouther note it is still a good idea to take the inspection cover off and take a look at the inside for signs of failure or so to be failure.

Thanks all for the suggestions, and the pics . I found the plates. Don't give you much room, do they?

I got started on them late yesterday, so I only got the front passenger cab mount and the front core mount replaced, but the area looked pretty rust free. Had some surface rust, but nothing eating away. I used a wire brush and cleaned off all the rust and put a few coats of rustoleum on. Hope the others are not any worse.

For those who may have to do this in the future -
I didnt like Energy Suspensions explanation on how to get the old mounts off (pound from top, which there's no access from top). So after a trip to the hardware store for some long enough bolts, I used a steering wheel puller, and the cab mount slide right off.

Driving to work this morning, I heard another pop as I pulled into the parking lot, so I turned down the radio and listened again. It was from the passenger side, but not from the front as usual, came from the rear mount.

I take it that the rear cab mount comes up into the bottom of the cab?

Thx

Yup. At least on my reg. cab it does. You'll have to lift up the carpet to see them. I'm pretty sure they're recessed into the floor too, and the recess might be covered with duct tape or something similar.

I had the exact same popping noises when I would flex the frame off-road. Turns out that my crossmember was broken at the rear cab mounts. Here are some pix. . Scroll to the very bottom and look at the crossmember after I removed it from the truck.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably have to remove the rear bench to get to them. I hope I dont have the same problem as you ran into.

I like your mods. Been thinking about relocating the rear shock mounts, too.
