Well, how embarassing. At school, jump in, turn the key.....click, click. Volts adn battery fine. Listened under the hood and it was the starter. Every time I tried to start it the starter would go click. So I pulled on the belt to get it to atleast almost turnover and tried it. After a few minutes it started. SO EMBARASSING!!!!!! What is wrong with it?? Is it just a bad contact or is the starter doomed?? It was a bit chilly today, maybe it was just sticking??? Please help, I would like to avoid this again!!!
nex time it does it try jumping it at the solenoid. connect the lil terminal and the side withthe battery, don't connect the 2 big ones. I made that mistake once and it took a small chunk outta my screwdriver.
Might be that solenoid, you could jump around it with a jumper cable next time it does it, if that makes it work replace the solenoid. If it doesn't, starter probs.
Well, after talkin to my dad, he thinks the starter might not have meshed with the flywheel and was just hitting it. Freak occurance. I jumped the 2 terminals with my trusty screw driver(nuttin bad happened) it still made the same sound, from down near the starter. The solenoin is pretty cheap, should I replace it just for kicks??
If you hear a click from the solenoid on the fender (near battery), than it's not that solenoid. Your dad sounds wrong. Next time it happens, have someone turn the key so the solenoid clicks, keep the key in the start position, and wack the starter with a hammer. If it starts up after the wack (or a couple), it's best to replace the starter unit, it's like $150 and very minor labor, 20 minutes to replace one.
I know this may sound wierd but check the selenoid that is bolted to the starter, the 2 bolts may have worked themselves loose. happened to me last week.
Well, it didnt do it today. It was about 20deg, freezin cold and it started fine. Gas guage stuck at 1/4 tank again but thats a whole different story.......
it's defineately the starter motor itself - solenoid is ok becuase you hear the click. but replace the solenoid anyway it's cheap and you don't want your new starter to crap out again on acount of not changing that solenoid ,15 bucks
Well, I replacet teh sterter, had no choice because it did the same thing today and it didnt start after 20 min of trying. something came appart inside there because there was a little cup shaped thing that slid down the shaft. The new one had that but it was held up at the top of the shaft by a clip. Well, its starts alot better and its quieter when starting. Im happy, for $104 and a lifetime warrantee, I should'nt have to worry bout it.
I tried to start my truck yesterday after a drive it just rrrrrrrrrr then nothing. Tried rrrrrrrrr then nothing. ( no clicking sound from the solenoid) then rrrr and started. it started fine cold or since. It does take an extra second after turning the key. Had the charging system tested under load. It tested everything it i think solenoid, alternator, battery, grounds. except the starter. Could it be the ground on the starter. Its 4 years old rebuilt starter. How do you jump the solenoid ( next to the battery) correctly, the little terminal and the larger terminal closest to the battery? Also would hitting on the starter next time it doesn't start help? Is there a load tester for the starter, when its in the truck?
possible it is a ground problem - but sounds like either solenoid or starter itself - did you change the solenoid when the starter was rebuilt - you should even if the solenoid still works . hook up a multitester to the starter and have some one crank it . 9 volts or less with a fast spin means solenoid bad - above 9 volts with a slow spin - probably starter - but check the pos /neg cables , battery post connection loose? that one will getcha everytime . then again murpheys law may have struck here - you had your electrical system tested - it may have said thanks i can die now - LOl. it happens - usually to the battery does it start fine when its warm ?
