I've never altered the factory specs for gapping the plugs but I have run the timing a couple of degrees BTDC from specs.

do you run the plugs .044 or between .052 and .056? i have read alot of different people run them at both gaps. this is why i was confused...thanks alot..

I can't honestly recall. Whatever the underhood decal says to set 'em to is what I've always used. If a range is given I split the difference. i.e. 0.052-0.056 would end up at 0.054

A possible tip...

This is a method an old racer taught me......has proven true from my experience. He used to use this method on highly modified engines with upgraded ignitions and make some good power.

Basically you pull one plug with the wire attatched and crank the engine and measure the maximun distance that you can physically see the spark jump. You can do this a few ways.....some try to use the engine or chassis as the ground, or you can buy a "spark testing tool" ( I cant remember where I got mine, its been so long ago, but I think from Pep Boys? ) which to me is easiest and most accurate. You then take that distance ( in deciaml form ), and divide it by only the FIRST digit of your engines compression ratio to find the optimum spark plug gap.

For example....

If you measure a gap of say .500 ( 1/2 inch ), and your engine is 9.1 to 1 compression ratio, you would divide .500 by 9, you would end up with a gap of .055
