Well it's bad. I changed out the plugs and wires on my wifes '97 Epedition 4.6. All went well until I cranked it up and heard a horrible banging or knocking coming from the engine. I have double and triple checked everything. I even parked my mom-in-law's '98 Expidition 4.6 next to it and compared the two. Rechecked the wires and pulled the plugs out. I didn't see anything wrong at all. Has anyone had or heard of this before. The only thing I can think of is that something fell in the cylinder. I did blow out all the dirt around the plug before I pulled them out. I used some carb cleaner down the throttle body about 2 hours before I started it up too, but I don't think that would have harmed anything. Any ideas?
What could fall in? If it is not a 5.4 and does not have coil over plugs, and is like regular spark plug boots its not likely something fell in, did you change brands of spark plugs? sounds like maybe they are a little longer than what they should be and are hitting the pistons.
Tell me is it a 5.4 or a 4.6?
The Fordhouse said that the plugs Oreilly's sold me are replacement plugs for the originals. Both are Motorcraft but different #'s. The plugs I took out are AWSF 32P, the plugs Oreilly's sold me that I put in are AGSF 32FM. Also the new plugs are threaded longer and to seems that maybe they set deeper into the cylinder but don't they only set down to the tapered part of the plug no matter how far the threads go up on the plug? And it is a 4.6. We changed out the plugs on the drivers side with some that came out of an '01 F150 V6 and now it seems to have quit on that side.
If they are threaded longer, they will go in furthur, do yourself a favor and go to a dealer and pay the $4.00 each for the correct part, $32 is better than a new engine.
Part # AGSF32FM is the spark plugs that the ford dealership sold me for my 98 Expy 4.6. I questioned the part number because it is diffrent than the manual but the parts guy said the numbers have changed. I have not changed the plugs yet, so I can't comment about the threads being to long or engine banging.
you are right wrm. more threads does not mean it will go in further. it will only go as far as the taper. did you do any other type of work besides the spark plugs?
Thanks JETMAN4, and no I did nothing else to it except spray some carb cleaner down it's throat 2 hrs before start up to clean out the throtle body just abit. I did change the plugs out with some Autolites that are like old style plugs. All are fireing and I heard the banging comeing from the bottom of the engine. Oh and those plugs are $4 a piece not $6 from the Fordhouse.
Last nite I ran it till it got hot and reved her good and blew out whatever was in the cylinder. Engine is not banging anymore now. Smooth idle and drives fine. Just to let you know.
