Yes I want to put a powersrtoke in my 82 F350 but i am trying to find out what kind of work, time, money is involved to put one in all with a 5spd no auto. Or put in a regular 7.3 or turbo. I have freinds looking with me and was also wondering is it worth the time and money to wait for a powerstroke. I am currently running a 351w w/4spd. All help and info greatly thanked.
Money, can make it happen. How much do you want to spend? Your best bet would be to find a totaled donor truck. To find it all piece by piece would be crazy.
i new money but don't know how much a wrecking yard told me for a powerstroke and 5spd expect to start around 5,000. i have wrecker buddys looking for me also but hopefuly i can find one.
You'll probably need different/heavier front springs to handle the heavier diesel too.
I'm kicking myself for not keeping my old truck to throw a diesel in and make it a sled pullin' truck - but I would have been throwing in a hopped up 12V in that bad boy!! O well - now I'll have to spend all that money on new truck hop-ups.... wait... yep - did that!
I was thinking the same as cat_man, maybe look for an old 12v Cummins. You would have to do some work with motor mounts and mating a transmission to it, but it would be easier due to the lack of electronics. If you find two of them, let me know, I've got an '82 F-350 sitting at home in the shop, tore down to the frame that I'm rebuilding. I've got the 5" semi exhaust stack for it, now I just need the motor! LOL!
ok well not to be rude but I know about the rad and springs and I have been told the 4spd should mate rite to the 7.3 becuase its the same as the 6.9 but I am trying to find out beside the wiring will it pretty much slide right in my mechanic dosen't wont to but hes going to do the wiring and I am doing the swap I understand the basics on the swap but the little major things I want to make sure about and the price. Oh and as the springs go I checked the local auto parts and the part numbers on the computer shows the same part numbersfor the F350 diesel or gas its the same replacement, but i have a donar truck with leafs and a strait axle. well any other advice still taking.
if my money works right I want a 444E and the 6spd to go with it out of a interational I know it will fit becuase a friend of mine works at the local school bus barn as the head mechanic and thats what most of the buses run are 444E and he just put a fresh rebuild 7.3 in his 91 F250.
You already mentioned it, to get a straight axle. I do not like the twin I-beam axles at all! I think they are weak and wear out tires faster than anything else. I would definitely get a straight axle under the diesel, you'll be a lot happier about it.
