My son-in-law and daughter drive a 2000 Expedition with 75,000 miles which they bought new. They have had it serviced regularly, but recently there have been occasions that they thought that the accelerator stuck, that is until tonight. Upon accelerating to pass another vehicle, the accelerator stuck down, requiring considerable force to return it to a non-accelerating position.
I thought that Ford had introduced an electrical accelerating coupling.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I am looking for recommendations as to what to look for as a cause.

I would first look at the pedal to see if there is any interference or stiction that would cause the sticking and then look to the cable and ultimately the throttle body itself.
Move each through its full range of motion while disconnected from the other. Meaning: disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle body to test the pedal.
I had the same problem and ended up fixing it by taking apart the air intake from the throttle body and spraying wd40 into the throttle body. It was the "butterfly flaps" internally that were sticking. I had that happen on a 99 tauras as well.

As Monsta suggested, the throttle cable should be considered as a possible culprit. If a few strands of the cable are broken or frayed inside the cable sheath, the resistance created could lead to an occasional sticky throttle.

Thank you in advance,

I've got a '98 that had a sticky accel pedal. As soon as I cleaned the throttle body, the problem went away.
We had a 97 and the throttle body was the culprit in the throttle sticking when pressing it to go. Never stuck open, though. There are warnings not to clean the Throttle body (by Ford) but we did it for safety and cheapness (didn't want to pay a parts changer to do what I could do in about a half an hour or less).
