I just bought my first F-150 ('95 i6) and it leaks oil very badly through the oil pan gasket, and rusted oil pan. The rear main seal is wet. I am thinking I might as well just bite the bullet and pay for a rebuild. The truck has 120K miles so it might be a good idea. How much should I expect to pay for a rebuild of this engine?
Thanks
Depends on what kind of a rebuild you do, stock, light mods, trail rig, what do you have planned for the truck/motor. Another factor is what are you going to farm out as opposed to doing yourself.
I guess I would stick to stock rebuild. I myself am not too adept with engine work and only do very light things myself. I just want a dependable truck that will last as long as possible. Does this help at all?
First off how does the engine run? With only 120k miles on a 300 it should still run great unless it was not taken care of. I also have a 95 F150 I6 with 132k miles, I had to replace the oil pan 3 years ago because the pan rusted through. If your engine runs good there is no reason to rebuild it because its leaking oil. Fixing the leaks is alot cheaper than a rebuild. Just trying to save you alot of money. My 82 F100 has 312k miles and it needs a rebuild, you should be able to go to 300k miles before a rebuild as long as you take care of it. Fred
thats exactly what I needed to hear. I have a rusted oil pan, it leaks SO BAD! And I am not too familiar with these 300's so I was kind of nervous that at 100k it needed some work. It runs great (except I can't get the back two spark plugs to come out), nice and smooth but just bleeds from that oil pan. I will have a shop replace the oil pan and see if they can get the two plugs out. Thanks
I just recently did a clutch job on my truck, and it had a slow oil leak out of the engine somewhere, we got uder there ( btw i mean real slow, like only reason i knew it was there was the few oil drops in driveway) so neway, i got under there, and it was the rear main seal, and it looked like someone had over torqued the pan bolts. I spent like 20 to 30 $ total, and i did the work myself, dropping the oil pan is had becuase it doesnt come all the way off unless you loosed the motor mounts, but you can replace both (rear main and pan gasket) without takeing off the pan if you feed it around, but in your case, you prolly will have to loosen the mounts and lift the motor a bit.
