96 F250 how do i read codes?

Hi all, great site you got here. I have a question about my truck, a 96 F250 351 4x4. How do I read the engine codes, or more specifically, is it EEC-IV or OBD-II? Everything I see online says it's OBD-II but the manuals I have say EEC-IV. Need to know for sure so I can buy a code reader.

Thanks

see fordfuelinjection.com for instructions.

You don't need a code reader to pull codes :-)

In my understanding, obd2 is a interface specification so the computer can talk to standardized diagnostic equipment. Your computer will use EEC-IV internally and speak to the diagnostic equipment in ODBII

EEC-IV is not OBD-II compliant. If it is OBD-II (EEC-V is the first OBD-II Ford computer) it will have a black plug within a certain distance from the steering wheel and you will need a code reader to get the codes. The OBD-II plug is usually attached to the bottom of the dashboard, but I don't know for sure where it would be on your truck. If it is EEC-IV, then there will be a diagnostic port under the hood, likely attached to the drivers side fender just behind the hood spring, and like Popa Tim said, you can pull those codes yourself.

OBD-II was EPA mandated for the 1996 model year. According to this handy site:
http://autocenter.weber.edu/OBD-CH/vehicleoems.asp

Your F250 should be OBDII compliant and the diagnostic connector is underneath the ashtray on the passenger side of the dash. If you see a black connector there, about 1.5 inches by 3/4 inch, you indeed have OBD-II.

Most 1996 and even 1997 F-250's and up were still OBD-I. My guess is there must have been an exemption from the 1996 mandated OBD-II above a certain GVWR. The connector is under the hood on the driver's inner fender near the firewall for OBD-I. If it is OBD-II, the connector is under the dash to the right of the ashtray.

Thanks for the replies. It turns out that it is EEC-IV, it has the test connector under the hood on the driver side fender.

Popa Tim - thanks for the link, that web site helped ALOT!
