Smoking Starter!!!!!!!!

This morning when I went to get in my SD I let the glowplugs heat, waited for the "curly-q's" to go off. I turned the switch and it barely turned over and then smoke emerged from the hood. I jumped in the truck and put in neutral and pushed it outta the garage because I thought she was gonna burn to the ground. After I got it outside I looked under the truck and smoke was still coming from the starter. What could this be? After it said for about 30 minutes, It cranked, but bvery very slowly. After I let the motor warm up, I shut it off and it immediatly cranked. I am gonna take it to the dealer and demand a starter replacement or something to that effect. Truck has 20,000 on it and is a year-old. What should I do?

Do you have squirrel parts left under your hood ?!?!

What is your engine build date?

Could it possilby be the "hot" ground cable that was recalled on the '03 engine builds?

My 03 starter took a 'dumper' at 200 miles.. No smoke...But no crank either.. Never had the chance to get it in for the ground recall..

Sounds like the grounded cable is loose onto the engine as part of recall and did you get those fixed by recall? If not then it may be. Good Luck.
