Pre or Post Pyrometer Install
It is very easy to drill and tap your manifold, cast iron is a softer material to drill and tap than steel. Your EGT probes that you will get with these kits requires a 1/8" NPT threaded hole. Here are some simple instructions:
1. Approximately 2" from the outlet of the manifold use a center punch to put a small dimple in the manifold.
2. Using a good sharp drill, 11/32" or Letter "R", dip it into some grease about 1-2". Drill a little bit and re-dip (about 2-3 times). The grease will help keep chips from getting into the manifold and falling into your face.
3. Using a 1/8" NPT tap, dip it into the grease also (coat heavily) slowly run the tap into the hole, about every two turns go back 1 turn, until you get in 1/2 way. Pull out the tap blow off and recoat the tap with grease and finish tapping until the tap is at least 2/3 the way in no further than 3/4 the way. Go slow so the chips will get caught in the grease.
4. Clean off the hole with a rag w/ solvent to remove the grease, try to clean out the hole a little. The minute ammount of chips that may get into the maniford will not hurt anything.
5. Coat the first few threads of the fitting with some RED lock-tite (thread locking) and turn until hand tight then 1.5 to 2 turns (approximately 15-20 ft lbs of torque). Put some lock-tite on the nut of the EGT probe also, hand tighten and then no more than 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Be careful to not overtighten the nut because you can damage the probe.
6. Zip tie the probe wiring away from the manifold and your done. This process should take you approximatly 20-25 minutes.
I have done this over a hunders times and have never had any problems, if you have any questions or concerns feel free to ask.
I went pre turbo on mine too. I removed my exhaust manifold and did the drill and tap process off the truck. It did create a lot of chips and I was glad that I did. But if you are a brave guy and are careful it seems to work out just fine doing on the truck. If you run a shop vac with the hose next to where you are drilling and tapping that will help keep things clean too.
