My speedometer and oddometer stopped working about a week ago, which was great because my daughter stopped bugging me for 3 MPH over the speed limit. However, I need to get it fixed since my smog is due. I bought a speed sensor from Ford and went to replace it but it wasn't on the transfer case like the Chilton manual pictured it. I looked all over the trnny, transfer case and differential but couldn't find any part that matched the one Ford sold me and they said that was all they had for my van. Any thoughts?
Look at the transmission on the driver's side. There will be a wiring harness the first take-off is the automatic transmission connector. The second is the backup/neutral safety switch. This last item on the harness is the Vehicle Speed Sensor .
Thanks, that is exactly what the manual showed but I only have two take off's on the harness. I would have expected the sensor to be about 8 inches from the back of the tranny but there is only an impression cast in to the housing in that location. Any other suggestions?
I will saw that one when I was looking earlier today but wasn't sure that was related to the speedometer & odometer. I'll see if I can get a part tomorrow and replace it. Hopefully it solves the problem.
I'm wondering if changing the speed sensor worked for you...I didn't help me and I have the same problem. It's an analog speedo, but does get it's input from the speed sensor in the differential (it has rear ABS, so the speedo shares the sensor according to the owner's manual). Fuse, or something else I should look at next?
