have a question about transmission, pulling boat out of landing, i dropped shifter into 2nd gear by mistake, it would not pull boat until foot feed was on floor. when i noticed it was in 2nd gear i put it in drive and worked fine, called dealer and they said if transmission is put in 2nd gear manualy it will not pull anything. i thought 2nd gear was for pulling heavy loads would and it would start out in 1st and shift to 2nd, dealer says you have to put in drive for transmission to work properly, said 2nd shouldn't even be on colum . dosen't sound right to me ,any help would be appreciated
2nd is for starting out on slippery road like snow. It is no different than starting out in 2nd with a manual. I had a BUick years ago that when put in 2nd would start in 1st and then go to second. Totally worthless in slippery conditions. I have had Fords since 70 (other than the POS Buick), all have started in 2nd when put in 2nd.
You are correct in thinking your dealer doesn't sound right. I agree with the previous reply. When put in 2nd on the column, it does indeed shift to 2nd gear in the tranny. I think all of the automatics I have owned were like this. The dealer who said it shouldn’t even be on the column probably doesn’t really know what he is talking about because this serves its purpose. It helps starting off in slippery conditions. It also comes in handy for “downshifting” to keep from standing on the brakes for long periods of time when, for instance, descending a long meandering grade while towing and you want to keep the speeds down.
gotta love throttle by wire. when you manually shift into second gear the computer changes the input from the gas peddle. ie...50% input in drive = 25% input in second. this is only true when you manually shift into second.
try this little experiment...put your truck in second gear and start to accelerate, don't floor it, just accelerate like you normally would and when you reach about 30mph shift into drive without taking your foot off of the gas peddle.
GM trannys when starting in 2 will start in 1st and then shift to second but not drive. Fords have always stayed in 2nd when manaully put there. A 400 turbo GM will shift into 2nd at 6000rpm even if locked in low. Why bother even using 2 or 1 in a GM. That's just another reason that Ford makes a better vehicle.
