I have a 99 explorer w/ 4.0 sohc, 4wd. There was a rattle type noise that disappeared, but now the o/d light will flash after driving 3-4 miles. I was told it could be a trans range sensor, or solenoids in the trans sticking? anyone else have experience with this?
I've got the same light blinking my self ('97 f-150 4x4). I haven't noticed any changes or heard any noises, but just like yours, my light starts blinking after a few miles. I'm looking for answers too!
Vehicle never made it to the dealer. Long story short - trouble got worse before reaching dealer, step dad knew someone, drove it all the way there (20 miles +/-) with o/d off - did not flash; shop pulled pan - metal thru system, torque converter comming apart, shrapnal thru pump, valve body, fluid got dark quick!!
Guy is a real straight shooter, though. I asked him about options (1100.00-1700.00 to fix this) on next purchase. He told me ford trans' are terrible on all except f 150's. They repair 8 fords to 1 gm!! I'm really disgusted because I love that explorer. Not sure what to do. Had I towed it as soon as the o/d light started flashing (put appx 35-40 miles on after) maybe I'd get away with just a torque conv and flush.
Good Luck Fellas...
