I guess my original intention for this question was to find out how frequently these things go out. I can fully understand that electrical components can and do fail.
You are absolutely correct in thinking that this item could be designed much better to never, never fail! If it is a non-contact item it can definitely be designed to take the heat of an engine compartment. This is one of those items that I would watch to see if 1.) Ford recognizes that they have a problem, and 2.) if Ford fixes it in the new models. Heck - we've known about this problem for several years. Shouldn't Ford also be aware? It is one of a couple of items that leave you stranded on the road. Many would label this a safety-related item.
If they don't get it fixed it makes me long for an 8-passenger diesel Toyota!
I used to be semi-fanatical about reliability. I once owned a VW bus. I gave it up after I realized I needed to carry a spare engine to have a reliable vehicle!
I am definitely going to get a spare to carry in my glovebox. I will also continue to watch these forums to see if a true fix ever surfaces. Since Ford has started putting the 6.0 in their trucks, does anyone know if International is still using 7.3's or have they gone to the 6.0 also? Does the 6.0 also have cam sensor problems?

I have the 03 6.0L and loved my 7.3....the International number is VT365 for the 6.0L. I usually stop in here because I bought my first PSD in 95 and know the 7.3 pretty well. The 6.0L has a CMP also. 20,000 miles and no problems so far.
I've got a spare in the glovebox. Cheap insurance when you hit the backcountry. I still wounder why a speed sensor is $20.-cdn and the cam position sensor $170.-cdn at International. In affect aren't they the same thing? I quess if thats our biggest worry with the psd we are doing good.

For me its like buying nice pens, buy one, and I loose the thing somewhere, if I buy two, I never seem to loose the first one. Similar to CPS, don't have one, it will probably go out at the most inopurtune time, have a spare in the box, probably won't die on you, however if it does, 10mm wrench, spare CPS 30 minutes later (probably raining or snowing on me) back in a warm truck running down the road. I also have a spare set of coveralls behind the seat in case I have to do something while wearing nicer clothes as to not get them dirty crawling on the road and around the truck.
