Angry 04' Expedition w/factory Nav problems!

Just bought the truck brand new, it has a factory Navigation System. I can't pin point specifics on when this problem happens, but there are times when I get no sound at all from stereo, or navigation voice. It will show the volume level on the screen but won't adjust up or down. NOthing! NO sound at all. I think I have noticed it after my car has been shut off and soon after started again. This is so annoying to me as the damn thing is brand new. It's been "fixed" already by the dealer. The thing that irritates me the most (besides it being a brand new truck and pretty damn expensive to already be acting up) is the fact that there are no troubleshooting guides that came with it. Please Help! Did I mention that the Nav still guides me where I need to go, just get absolutely no sound from it.

Probably unrelated but I have a 01 xlt 4x4 w/5.4 I sometimes lose sound and have general trouble with the audio system. It turned out to be the kids in the back seat kicking the rear audio control panel behind the center console. I haven't taken the time to disable them. I mean the radio not the kids.

I have seen this happen from time to time on mine. I had an '03 with nav and now an '05 with nav. You need to remember that this system actually is a computer. If you shut it off and turn it back on before the nav system has time to shut it self down, these type of things can happen. The next time you shut your vehicle off, listen closely to the nav radio, that thing may run for up to 2 minutes storing data and shuting itself down.

Another possibility is the Dual Play button in the back seat if you happen to have children back there when this happens. I know I've been through that several times also.

Racer,
I currently have an '03 Eddie Bauer with the 5.4 and I was just wondering if your '05 with the new 3V 5.4 has a noticeable power increase over your previous '03. Thanks for your reply. K. Helms

khelms_98,

It absolutely has a noticeable power increase. The acceleration is the most noticeable. It acts like a totally different engine vs the 5.4L 2 valve. I'm really impressed with its performance. I'm also averageing about 1.2 MPG better than my '03.

Racer, thanks for your quick reply. I figured that the power increase would be noticeable. I just might go test drive one just to see. I won't be getting an '05 however. I'm only 18 and my mother wanted me in a "tank" which is why she got me a new '03 Eddie Bauer right when they came out in August '02. I consider myself very fortunate, plus I don't need an '05. The '03 is more than enough for me. Thanks again for your quick reply.

There are so many things that can cause the audio to shut down. 1. Please check Rear seat control, if you not sure how to check it out, try disable it pressing at the same time buttons 3 and 5 for 2 seconds. This will turn on/off the RSC. Make sure first that the radio are in single play mode by pressing the "Mode" button. 2. Also this usually happens when there is a short in any of the speakers, I mean, the two speaker wires can be make contact together on times, causing the radio to protect itself and shutting down the audio (although you can see the volume level working fine in the screen). If this is the case you may ask for an extensive speaker harness revision with the dealer. The radio will only return to normal sound when the wire short disappears. It will no work if you shutting down the complete system and than re-started again. Keep me informed.

I Have a 04' Expedition w/factory Nav problem also. The maps are off, The GPS clock is off. I went to the dealer he said he had send the vech to a Ford Raido repair shop. I said why it's a new car. I went to parts they called the company who made the raido for Ford. The tech said the ant needs to be replaced. He said it's not getting a full down load from the Sat. They order me a new one but I don't think it will fix the problem. I also have a power on problem. When you turn the car on you can not turn on the raido. Then after a while you it powers up. Wow what's next?

RPar, your radio need to go to a Ford Service center in order to be repaired. All of the issues you just had mention have been corrected already and Ford just release a new software version that fix the sympthoms you just describe. Try give an opportunity to Ford to give you the service and I assure you will be satisfied.

Question Raido

When I went to the dealer they called the company that makes the car raido I think it's Vistion or something like that. They order me a GPS ant. Do you have more info on how to get them moving on the fix for this. I was told they have to remove it and send it out for repairs. I bought a new truck and if you get a bad raido they should get you a new one.

That's correct, the service center needs to remove the radio from your truck and download the new software fix to the radio in order for the issues to be corrected. In the mean time, it depends on the radio availavility, you can get a new one or wait 'till your radio to be returned to you. If the dealer does not respond to you email me to design@avantel.net your radio part number and I can tell you how to proceed in order to upgrade your radio.

Angry more problems

Hi Elbuencarlos & all,

I spoke to the dealer again now He said He want's me to bring the car in again and they did not order the ant. He wants to look at it again. Now at this time I called Vestion or some thing like that. They make the raido for Ford well I was told they don't even send it back to them. They send it to another repair place. And the maps Ford get's them through NavteQ. I was also reading that some one else on this forum has the smae problem. If this is going on in other places more people need to beaware of this problem and Ford needs to get on board and fix this the right way. Now in my area the dealer has no clue about what to do. the asst. mng didn't even know how to handle it. wow now they said we will call you back. they don't know who they are dealing with.

Too bad they don't know how to handle it. The must send your radio to Elecktrasound service center located in Indiana. This is the only service center capable of repair Navigation radios. If I can have your radio Part number, perhaps I can give you a hand.

I took my 04 Expedition to the service shop because the clock would not set itself and very week satelite reception. The shop said they have to order and replace the GPS antenna. I'm still waiting for the antenna to come in. I told the service shop that they better have plan "B" sitting on the shelf if plan "A" does not fix the problem with the navigation system.

I tried to call Ford's "Customer No Service" and complain about the mislabeled pack of 9 Mapping CD's. I told them I wanted the CD's replaced when I found out from Nav Tech that CD #9 is misslabeled. North and South Carolina are not on CD #9 as labeled, but are on CD #8.

I have found that no one at Ford Corporate will take ownership for the Ford navigation system. I would like to get a name and phone number to some one at Ford to complain to. The dealer is totally clueless and helpless.

Navigation system update. I waited 2 and a half weeks for the GPS antenna to come in. After I brought my 04 EB back to the service shop, I got a phone call from the shop telling me they ordered the wrong GPS antenna and will have the correct GPS antenna shipped in overnight. The next day they called me again to tell me the new GPS antenna did not fix the problem and they will have a new Navigation/Radio shipped in the next day. Today I picked up my 04 EB from the shop and the clock and navigation system is working perfectly. The signal strength is now showing White letters, not Red letters. The clock will set itself in about 5 to 15 seconds after starting the engine.

I looks like Ford will not do anything about the mis-labeled Mapping CD's that came with the 04 EB. It seems very strange for Ford to contract Nav Tech to create the Mapping CD's and not provide Ford customes with a corrected replacement set of mapping CD's. Maybe us Expedition owners should swamp Nav Tech with phone calls regarding the mis-labeled Mapping CD's.
