A buddy rode with me a few weeks back and asked that question. My 5.4 makes a faint pinging sound that I can't identify. Its faint enough that I hadn't noticed it before, and even now some riders can't hear it. Its not detonation, or a low octane knock and I also don't believe its related to bearings or wrist pins. Reason is that the pinging sound does not increase in rate when accelerating. It does seem to get louder, but the number of pings per second does not increase. If it was bearings, low oil pressure, detontation, etc it would get faster along with the RPMs, right?
Please oh please tell me its not engine related........
Thought I'd bump this old thread hoping someone may have heard of this. I still haven't identified the source of the pinging, and fortunately its not getting worse. But it sure is bothersome not knowing what it is. Its loudest upon hard acceleration or under towing load, but it can be heard almost all the time. I'm still convinced that its not detonation or a timing problem, but does sort of have that sound to it. Oil is changed regularly and the pressure guage looks good also.
Also you might check the bolts on the torque converter one or may be loose. I had that happen to one of my work trucks and it caused a pretty consistant dull knock sound
Mike , I too have the same problem with my 5.4L. There is a TSB on the 2000-2001 5.4L and 6.8L that involves replacing the y-pipe on the exhaust. It has to do with the way it is "ram horned" My local dealer quoted me 173.40 for the new y-pipe. But he couldn't promiss me that it would sound any different so I said no thanks! You may be stuck with the sound too. BTW the TSB # is 01-1-3. You can pull a search on it.
Big Orn,
No, its not a dull knock, it sounds like detonation from timing too far advanced, BUT, it does not seem to get faster with increaced RPMs, only louder. It can only be heard above 30mph or so, never at idle. Definately louder under a load, but does not seem to increase its speed or number of pings per second.
Thanks guys for all the responses. I'll keep looking for vacuum leaks, loose parts and check out the TSB.
Does it happen at a specific RPM range? Like, 2200-2500 RPM? It sounds like the old "exhaust flutter" (exhaust resonance). It's almost like shaking a coffee can with rocks inside. Flutter is famous in older V10's, and I'm not sure if 5.4's had it too.
If this is your problem, do NOT replace the "Y" pipe with the Ford "fix". You will lose power and mpg. You might also check the torque converter shield. Sometimes it vibrates against the housing and rattles like detonation.
High Ho Silver
When I saw the "cremps" on the Y pipe on my 01 250 5.4L I had the exhaust replaced with duals all the way back. Now that I know they are called "RAM HORNED" I'm glad I had it removed because it sounds it should be on a dodge.
Yea - the "flutter" thing...but on a 5.4? I've never heard of it before, but...
Or, to keep it simple, if it's not engine or drivetrain related and only does it while moving and then only above 30 mph, there could be some shield or guard loose underneath your truck.
Or maybe a motor mount cracked or broken.
The steady beat that doesn't change with RPM's has me stumped, to tell the truth.
If the sound is NOT RPM related and NOT road-speed related, I too would lean toward vacuum. Especially because you say it gets 'louder', but does not change tempo.
Exhaust could be the likely culprit, but you mentioned it does not change w/RPM's so I'd have your vacuum lines checked.
My V10 does it. It usually is the worst between October & April, when they switch to oxygenated gas around here. Running 92/93 octane clears it up (but I don't use the high grade...only 87 octane....60 miles per day....$$$$$).
