The door locks and the mirror adjustor don't work on the drivers door.
The door locks work OK on the passenger side. I replaced both switches but that didn't solve the problems. It is either a power or a ground problem. Does anyone have any suggestions or maybe a wiring diagram for the drivers door.
Nope, that wasn't it. I took the door apart, found the ground, cleaned it up and put it back together. Then I checked continuity between it and a bare metal part under the dash and that worked. The door lock switch will lock but it won't unlock. I checked the wires to the switch and there is power on one side but not on the other. So I guess I'm going to need a wiring diagram to trace where the wires originate from as they are all bundled up.
In that case it sounds like mirrors & locks are 2 seperate problems. The drivers switch & the switch in the rear receive voltage from the lock & unlock relays. The relays are in the "auxiliary relay box" in the left rear near the lift gate washer pump. Do the locks work if you use the switch in the rear? Try swapping the relays & see what happens.
The mirrors & power antenna are wired to fuse 1. Is the antenna working?
Since the locks work from the switch in the rear it sounds like there is an open in the wiring between the unlock relay & the drivers door switch on the pink/light green wire. Strange thing about this wiring diagram is that it shows the lock relay wired to the unlock side of the door switch???
Have you changed a flat tire recently? I've seen a couple of posts where replacing the jack can break the wire in this area.
I checked out the relay box. I found two sets of relays, two were square and two rectangular. The two square (1" x1") relays seem to be the ones related to the lock/unlock switch. I rotated the relays, with no change. I tried to isolate a specific relay be pulling one and then pulling the other one, but with one relay or the other out nothing worked. So I assume that both relays are OK and they both have to be in place for the system to work.
I did notice that the jack was loose, so I tightened it down. The wiring harness to the rear switch didn't seem to be affected. But After reading your last post about broken wiring I'll look at that again.
From your last post it also sounds like the wiring is routed from the relay to the rear switch and then on to the front door switch. The only place where the wiring could be damaged is where the wiring harness goes from the body to the door, thru the flexable tubing. Which makes me think that opening and closing the door, in extreme temperatures could have caused a problem where the wires move.
Yeah the relays are not the problem. Each relay has 2 switch wires, one to the rear switch & one to the drivers switch. The wire to the drivers switch is broken somewhere. As you say it could be from opening & closing the door. Just have to trace the wire down & find the break.
Thanks 87 XLT, that will give me somrthing to do. I wish I had a garage to work in, as it is below freezing with snow on the ground.
That could also be where the problem is with the mirror control switch. They both went out at the same time.

I might be able to determine which wire on the relay, by color, is the one that feeds the open side on the door lock switch and rig up a jumper to see if I can make it work...
The 2 wires connecting relays & drivers switch are Pink/yellow stripe & pink/light green stripe. I think the simplest way to test this would be to remove the drivers side kick panel & shove a sewing needle thru the pink/yellow & connect a volt meter between the needle & the ground in the door, it should read 12 volts. Do the same with pink/light green. If your good to this point repeat the test on the same wires in the door.
The mirrors are wired from fuse 1 to the door switch on orange/light green. Strange that mirrors & locks would quit at the same time, but maybe both wires are broken from all the flexing.
Working on a car in that cold weather would'nt be one of my favorite things either. How cold is it getting there?
Thanks for the info. I'll try to check it out today.
We are wintering in Homer, Ak (about 250 miles south of Anchorage). My wifes dad is over 90 years old and living alone. He recently had a pacemaker installed and lost his driving previliges for 6 months. Winters are alot milder here compared to Slana (250 miles north of Anchorage). Yesterday it was in the 20's with winds about 20-25 mph. Today it has warmed up to the low 40's, but I don't know how long it will last.
I talked to a neighbor (in Slana), and it has been below 0 already. Check out this website for some pictures: www.nabesnahousebb.photosite.com
Thanks again for your help, Gary
Very nice website. I would'nt mind hooking up with one of those 30 or so pound salmon.
A couple of years ago the wife & I took a cruise of the inside passage & discovered what a beautiful state Alaska is. It was sure nice to get away from the maddening crowd here in So. Cal., and with the non stop building of new homes it's only getting more crwded here. I hope your Father inlaw is doing well, and good luck with the door locks.
I didn't get to finish checking out the wiring yesterday. I got started by pulling off the kick panels and started snowing, wind gusting to 40 mph and temp. dropped to in the 20's. So needless to say I hung out by the heater for the rest of the day. This morning it's still cold, but the wind has stopped. We accumulated a couple of inches of snow. Not as bad as Anchorage they got a foot and expecting 4 inches more today. Boy, the roads and traffic gets bad when it gets like that. That's one this to say about So.Cal., it's probable nice all of the time.
