Do I need a new turbo?

I have a 1996 F350 PSD with 90k on it. The truck is in pretty good shape overall, but just does not run like they are supposed to. Sometimes it will bog down on take off and smoke like a train. Other times it runs fine and when you step down on it, it acts like it wants to take off, but just won't do it. If you are on the interstate, the truck runs fine until you hit a hill, then it slows way down and starts to act like a gas engine with a plug wire breaking down. I am guessing it could be either injectors, injector pump, or turbo. Has anyone had this problem, or have any other suggestions before I spend some serious money.

Thanks
Derek H

Change your fuel filter first. If they clog the truck gets REAL gutless.

The 94-97's also have that screen in the regulator port in the filter bowl that can plug up.

Slight thread hijacking: Cookie did that fuel pump fix your truck?

Yes it did, mostly. Evidently whatever it is that breaks down in the pump will leave a deposit in the inlet of the filter bowl and almost plug it.

It was running almost perfectly after the pump change, but still just a tiny bit off. I removed the outlet line from the pump, pulled the filter, and blew the line out with the air compressor and it has never run better. I'm not sure exactly what is was in the line...it was black, gritty, and had a slightly metallic feel to it....I think it may have been like a carbon deposit from the brushes wearing on the armature in the pump, but I don't know for sure.

At any rate, it's been completely flawless since then.

Thanks for asking.

I already changed the filter, and flushed out the filter bowl. Any other ideas?

Get a fuel pressure guage and connect it to the high pressure side. Go test drive it and see if you have a pressure drop when you are climbing the hill. If so you need a fuel pump.
