where do you guy's mount the tach and do you have any pics of some? I'm looking for the small 2-3" tach not the 8" ones with a 4" shift light. I can't picture where they would look descent.
Mine is mounted on the steering column in front of the speedometer. I had it rolled off to the side to get the speed and rpm setup and memorized then I moved up in front of the speedometer.
I have a 5" monster tach with a 1" or 1.5" shift light mounted on the drivers side "A" piller with one screw and I think it looks fine (see pics in gallery). The real purpose for me is not looks but function, when you are at 100% throttle plus the bottle you need to pay attention to the terrian in front of you, not looking down for a small tach to see shift points. That is where the "BIG" shift light comes in handy, you don't have to look for it, it practically blinds you (you can not miss it mounted in this location). I suppose it's just a matter of opinion or operation, if you are just useing your truck for a daily driver I guess you wouldn't want a big tach in your path of vision all the time. I have seen many tach's mounted to the steering column with a large hose clamp and it seems to work fine. -Ed
i have a little tach on my steering column as well, i have a pic in my gallery if you wanna see it. just a sun tach or something that i bought at autozone.
I have a 5" monster tach mounted on the steering column.
On my other truck I have a 3 1/2" tach with shift light mounted
on the windshield pillar. I like it mounted on the pillar because you
do not have to look down.
I have a Sun SuperTach mounted on the steering column with a screw clamp. Two tips: paint the clamp flat black, and place a small piece of rubber under the tach base. This isolates the tach from vibration.
In the past & what I will do on this truck I mounted a small 2-2.5" tach on the top of the dash. Behind the pad on the metal part of the dash angled toward me. I personally liked it alot better than the column mounted ones I have seen.
My bronco had air but it was long gone when I got it and a tach was mounted in the air vent to the far left.
It dont look stock but nether does it look out of place and it is easy to see.
Wow ! I put mine on the dash and ran my wires down the vent for the defroster there was just enough flex in the duct to slip the wires through.
By the way I have a 79 half ton 2 wheel with a factory 460 and it is the only one I have ever seen. Lots of 4x4 and 3/4 ton but this thing is just a hot rod I would like to know how many have been built like this? Any Ideas ? let me know . giamanut@comcast.net
My 2" tach is also mounted on the steering column in front of the speedometer. I can see all the guages and the speedometer. Painted it and the worm drive clamp, flat black. Be sure to hook up the light to dimmer wire. I forgot to do this the first time, sure was bright. Great to have a tach when you are pulling trailer, to keep in your power band.
