when is started my 390 today the oil pressure was at 78 psi and i noticed a high pitched whine from the front around the distributer would the distributer if it is old a worn whine the distributer came out of a 69
Eww. Dont run 20w50. Even though it was 70 degrees outside, I still suspect it was the relatively high oil pressure that was causing the bypass to activate. Do you run a high volume oil pump?
What that means, is that the pressure was high enough to overcome the bypass in the oil pump. This prevents excessive pressure in the motor. It allows the excess oil to go back to in front of the pump; essentially back to the pan. Everything going to the motor gets filtered though. Due to the way the pump operates, in which it sends the oil out in pulses, it causes the bypass to buzz and / or whine. It's ok, dont worry about it. Like I said, a lighter / thinner oil will solve this.
