4 Catalytic's

Hi all I have a 1997 4x4offroad f150 4.6L, I was under it the other day, and noticed a sickening sight 4 cats My truck has 172k miles on it, it had 168 when i bought it this summer. It's awesome it drives like the day it was made, very clean very good condition. When i get er dualed out some time here soon, I plan on having at least the back 2 cats cut off. Only the back 2 beacuse, i would like to keep it legal. but i dont want all that restriction on the engine. And I dont want to put tooo LITTLE back pressure on the engine. I live in South Carolina, and sadly itd be illegal to have them all of anyway.
Questions
1.) Would removing 2 of them reduce the back pressure by to much? Which two I assumed the back two b/c they should be eassier, and there for cheaper to do.
2.) If i removed all cats then put a high performance aftermarket cat, at the back of the H pipe would that supply sufficent back pressure, and does any one know if thatd be legal in South Carolina?

Thanks for your help

IMO, I would leave them all as they are pretty good flowing cats, and aftermarkets are fairly spendy...from what I've seen.

Your oem muffler is huge as a gas tank and pretty restrictive in my book.

I've heard a 5.4L with out cats and it sounded like a popcorn popper on roids...

I wouldn't mess with the cats either. I believe 2 of them are pre-heaters and the other 2 are the actuall cats. I replaced my stock muffler with a Borla and it has a nice rumble. If you want something loud, just cut off the muffler and run straight pipes. Check out the exhaust fourm a little further down for all kind of ideas.

I guess that would be why the first and seconds are different sizes.
I'm set on FlowMaster 30's I used to have a 99 Ranger w/ 3.0 v6, and i had the 30's on there, and it was beautiful, sounded like a v8 idlein, and even at top rpms, there was no rice to it at all. I jus hope they do even more for the ol 4.6
Yea, i never venture out of the 97-03 f150 forum.

FWIW, I have Flowmaster 40s on my 5.4L and it sounds great! I hope that they will sound even better after I put on my gibson headers this weekend!

Ok here goes, I have a 99 f150 5.4l v8 with NO cats and dual 3" exhaust with a magnaflow dual in dual out muffler and gibson headers, sounds awsome, nice rumble to it doesnt sound grunjy at all, I had just the cat back exhaust with headers and it sounded pretty good but was very quite, now its a little louder, not loud like its gona wake up the neighborhood though. If I where you I would go with high flow converters, dont go as big as I did though 3" is too big and I need to take mine down to at least 2.5" my exhaust is way too open and I need to restore some torque
