86' Ranger 2.3 Distributor ?
I have a 2.3 4-cyl. 5-speed 86' Ranger. I had alot repaired last year. TFI(Control ignition module) New Ford Starter, ECC Power relay, ignition relay, timing belt, battery, exhaust manifold, etc.
My truck was in the shop for an apparent electrical short which turned out to be (after 400.00 in shop fees for this guy to find the problem) the relay over by the air filter.
BTW, he also told me that someone had forgotten to replace the apparent retainer clip on the bottom of the TFI distributor rod and needed to be replaced. He said it was bumping up and down wearing out the contacts on my Dist. cap. I talked to someone yesterday and said that the missing clip causes the gears to disengage, and would not even run.
Then yet another guy said the TFI Distributor has nothing of the sort. That there's no "clip" inside a TFI distributor that retains anything. The endplay is limited by a collar on the shaft and the gear on the other end.
It runs, but it seems to run better and starts easier when it's warmed up. It also sounds like the starter. But now that first mechanic has me wondering, because there is wear inside the Dist. Cap.
What is the story on this type of TFI (ignition control module)Distribitor Rod? Could someone please tell me? Thanx!
