I would agree swap in a D60 in the front if you can find one. If you mainly just do muddin as you say a D44 would hold up. You would break some parts now an then but If you see the rocks Go D60 in the front. For lockers spool or welded in the rear works good up front a detroit is always a good unit. I wouldn't spool the front to hard to turn. But an ARB up front works nice

My D60 front is welded and I am on 40's I can turn with one finger on dry pavement. Hydrolic assist is a wonderful little add on.

Jopey I too have D60s, 40s, hydro assist but with ARBs. The steering problem is not always on the road it's when your offroad trying to make a sharp turn and slide through it. Or off camber with mud you tend to slide down hill more than if you where open in the front. The main differance I have is I do this in my jeep not a full size. My full size is my tow rig

Oh yeah. for sharp turns, I just shift the rear into neutral.

Mud I hate it too. I don't have that option to shift into front drive only wish I did. on the next rig I build I will have that option plus cutter brakes. Just gathering the parts up. Have the D60s already. scalped them from a 79 f-250 I bought for $200 bucks then scraped the rest of the truck except the 205 and got $130 at the scrap yard not a bad deal. Plus the truck had a Dual mico lock which new is $300. so I saved that too

Yea, I don't blame you guys. Mud is so much more technical than rocks it can be intimidating. You can run a line on rocks, come back next week and its exactly the same. Watch a buddy run a line on rocks, see what worked and what didn't, then make a better run yourself learing from their mistakes. Not so with mud. It changes with each pass of a rig......axle snapping, hp robbing, gooey truck devouring goodnes. Mud is what seperates the man from the boys.

Mud........MMMMMMMMMMMMm......GOOD!

Although lately I have been wearing a boot/brace thingy on my left foot which is soft sided and open toed with steel support rods. Last weekend the mud was real deep at Harold's Junkyard. Had to throw the brace away and bust out the spare. BUT, I did get the needed parts.

I thought you were supposed to let a dodgie and a chevit or two get burried in the pit and pack them down.

i like it all, but i am a bit biased towards rocks! you may have the same line to choose from but you may not be able to get back to it every time. also, esp in places like tellico where it is real muddy/wet, those rocks get real slick real quick!

it is fun to drive around to all the local holes though and pull out all the 2wd chevy and stock jeeps. i get a lot of laughs though when they see my H2 sticker! i am just waiting for that golden momnet when i finally do get to ****** one out of the mud

Don't know what kind of rocks you guys run. but most of the rocks I run don't stay put. add mud and water on top of them, means more go juice. Lot harder to roll over in the mud. Don't get me wrong I get muddy everytime I go out. I just steer around the big mud holes. I hate cleaning it off. Another thing I run without doors and no top means mud everywhere. The problem is I let my 13 year old son drive now and he loves the mud. He likes the rocks too, but he mainly loves to push the V8 and hear the flow masters roar.

fishmann I was one of the lucky ones to pull out a H2 stuck in the mud on a trail ride. Laughed about that all day.

I have power steering on my rig. Do you think steering will be difficult with a locker in the front and power steering?
