My in tank fuel pump is not working? I have no pressure when I should have 8psi. the fuel just ooozez out.
I have an, 87 f-350 custom utility/service truck 5 speed OD w/ a 460 eng and a holley 4180 carb. I don't know if I have some kind of fuel pump relay or something. And if I do where would it be located???
Under the dash I have a fuel pump shut off switch that is not connected. and their is only 1 fuel tank
You should hear the pump kick on when you first turn the key to run. I think there is supposed to be about 15psi with the hot fuel option on the 460's. Also check for blown fuses. There should be a relay too somewhere.
I hate to say this but I put in two new, from Ford pumps in my tank because the gage quit working, the pumps worked but I thought I would just install two new pumps. Well, a few months later I started faving problems with pumps. Finally I installed a external electric pump and presure regulator two years later I still use that pump. This was a carb. truck. On the EFI Trucks there is a high presure pump forward the tank switch over valve that seems to be the one that fails the most.
I don't see a fuel pump relay switch anywhere. Plus this 87 f350 w/460 eng w/ holley 4180 carb w/ 5 speed OD trans, has been sitting for 2yrs +.
Answer me this? I removed a "thinga-ma-jig" that connected on the fuel line it's about 3" long with 3 ports, 2 coming from the tank and 1 going to the carb, Don't know what it is called? I'm sure it's the unit that returns un-used fuel back to the tank, What is that piece called? would I be wrong in saying it's the fuel return valve???
So when I removed that "thing-a-ma-jig" I ran the fuel line from the tank into a 1pint size container. I then cranked the engine and counted for 20 seconds the container was full, do'es that tell me the pump is working??? and that "thing-a-ma-jig" may have been clogged, there is a screen in it. So I then connected it fuel line back to the carb without that piece and tried to start it, and still no start. I opened the primary fuel bowl sight screw and the fuel was at the wright level (rebuilt carb). Now I'm thinking Timming??? because all I'm getting is some hissing, choking, and a little back-fire? I already replaced the wires, plugs, fuel filter, dist cap, rotor and rebuilt the carb. and still no start.
I don't hear the fuel pump come on. Someone told me that you can put somekind of sound proof thing around the pump and you won't hear it, don't know! this fuel pump was replaced once before. I need all the help I can get on this one!
the thingamajig is a "vapor return" which you con only get from a ford dealer for over 50 dollars. I am having a big fuel problem myself. 86 f250 460. Starts up but then stalls right after that. I believe the bowl runs out. There is a fuel relay, on your drivers side fender. green and grey box I believe. I have replaced those, ignition switch, starter switch, vapor return (junkyard), fuel pump, and a new factory rebuild holley 4180 carb. still same problem. I am now rewiring alot of the crap they had sitting on my block melting. alot of crap these 460s can put a man through. Well I can only wish you luck and if I find out what to do with mine I will relay to you how I did it. Then I put the 4sale sign in the thing.
There is a "Ford Fuel Vapor Shutoff Valve" for sale on eBay (currently-1 November) at an opening price of $12.00. I've bought a number of parts for my '83 F350 at substantial savings on eBay.

I wouldn't get rid of it for this reason. Electric pumps run at a (nearly) constant speed so they provide an essentially constant fuel flow regardless of engine fuel demand. That portion unused by the engine is returned to the tank via the valve. Getting rid of this valve could result in overloading the pump. I don't think these pumps have a built-in bypass.

the relay on the '83 f250 is in a box beside the brake booster. just replaced mine. also put a new tank an fuel pump. you can get the items at advance auto
