Newbie alert...
I just purchased a 429 from a guy who lost his garage in a recent storm....But I cannot find the code telling me what year it is etc.
I have been scraping with a putty knife (oil leaks everywhere) in an attempt to find out any information.
Can anyone tell me exactly where to look on the block? I would just like to know what year it is.
This is an easy one but you're probably doing the right thing to use a putty knife if the engine is cruddy. Look on the cylinder heads, up by where the railing is for the valve covers, between the exhaust ports. If it's a 429, it's either late sixties or early seventies so the casting number should look like C8VE up to (I think) D3VE depending on when the 429 went out of production. C=1960's, D=1970's, etc, the number (ex.8) is the exact year, V=Lincoln, and E=Engine. So like C9VE would have been a 1969 Lincoln, Ford, or Mercury Engine. There is another casting number on the side of the block (Passenger side, I believe) which will be much the same with some other letters and numbers. Look for something like D1VE-A2A and possibly some other combinations of letters and numbers depending on what changes were made to the particular block that year. The best advice I can give you is to go to a good book store and buy a Ford Parts Interchange book. It's good for the basic fundamentals but don't use it like the bible. The author made some errors in it which when relied on will seriously get you ticked off. Other than that just get some good degreaser and a wire brush to find the things you're looking for. Good luck!
You are looking for a code on the passenger side of the block. But remember that thi is just the year that the block wa lat changed. You can use the same casting for several years before there needs to be a change to it. Best bet is to find the rest of the codes on the heads and the intake if it has one.
For example I have a D1VE block, D3VE A2A heads, and had a D6VE intake. I know mine was out of a 1976 Lincoln. FYI the "A2A" is the last revision made on the heads.
C=60 D=70 E=80 F=90 and so on...
The second character is the year code
The third is the make... V=Lincoln
And the fourth is the group... E=Engine
