i was told that if the water level in the rad is lower than than were the thermastat is this will also cause air locks is that right becauce i dont understand how trucks with rad in the box (race trucks) can keep cool
Incorrect.
In this case the water level is still WAY higher than the stat.
Is this a cross-flow radiator? Never thought a upright one would have air pockets. The top of the radiator should be above the engine, unless things have been modified.
Pull a heater hose from the heater box and hold it above the engine and add water until it comes out the end. That should get rid of any air - but I do not think this is your problem.
I would definitely suspect the water pump. I had the same problem with mine, and a new water pump cleared it up. I have a 4 core radiator, and it was still overheating. Frustrating to say the least. If you are noticing coolant on the ground after you shut it off, sounds like the bearing is getting ready to go. There's a weep hole by the sealed bearing, and it's designed so that when the bearing starts going, it rips the seal. My two cents says replace the pump, especially if you have done the hoses, thermostat, and checked the fan.
