I went to the dealer to order a 2005 F250 with the 6.0L PSD. I told the salesman that I drive less than 20,000 miles per year and most of that is four 3,000 mile round trips pulling a 5,000lb trailer, about a total of 8 weeks per year. The rest of my driving is around home, for about 44 weeks, is 5 miles or so, round trip, in Atlanta traffic, no trailer. The salesman was adamant that the daily short drives would be harmful to the PSD. He said I would be unhappy with the PSD surging and running rough in traffic. He said it is designed to be run hard and if I didn't run it hard it would be a problem. He said the few problems that his customers have had from the PSD are almost all from owners who use them on short trips. He recommended the V10. I have some confidence in the salesman since I have bought 4 Fords (3 F150s, one Explorer and one Escape) from him since 2002. He has always been good to his work, which is why I go back to him. He knows he gets a sale either way, PSD or V10. Also, when I was traveling I stopped at a Ford dealer in Des Moines, and the manager told me the same thing. That is, if I do not plan to really work the PSD, get the V10. He said the PSD needs to be worked hard to run smooth.
Please note that neither the salesman or the manager meant this as anything bad about the PSD. They each explained that this was a characteristic of all heavy duty diesels. Work a diesel hard or get a gas engine.
The V10 is cheaper, but I still lean toward the PSD because it is such a beast.
Comments please, that 44 weeks per year of short trips in traffic would be harmful to a diesel and I would have poor driveability?
The new V10 is nice: 362 Horsepower with the Torqshift, and it's faster than the PSD. However, the nonsense about the PSD not handling in/about traffic is baloney. My trucking days are over, and I tool around in an Excursion PSD, all suburban mileage, and it purrs like a kitten. I think the PSD is a much better option, and twice the mileage to boot.
I live 4 miles from work and use the truck as my daily commuter. I fire the truck up and let it idle till the oil pressure has stabilized for 30 seconds or so and then throw it in drive. Next I clank out of the driveway and down the street and down the hill towards the office. I don't get on the throttle much on the way to work.
I've been doing it for over a year and a half an no problems so far. I pull a 10,000ish pound trailer every so often plus with the SCMT installed I do put the pedel to the metal and blow out the carbon once it is all warmed up.
Does this guy happen to have some V10s that he can't move? The PSD is perfectly driveable for these short trips.
Well, you could get a Predator 'or' SCMT and work it hard for the 5 miles or take a few extended miles each day or weekend to enjoy the PSD!!.. In all reality, short trips aren't the best for any engine.. I do ALOT of SLOW commuting in mine.. Not a good situation either.. And some longer range (usually empty) driving.. And also alot of just around town.. Never even a cough!!! ..Never.. I mainly bought mine for the heavier towing/hauling I'll be doing in the next few years, other than my boat/jet ski's/cycles that I do now.. I like the 'slightly' better mileage, and the power of the 6.0, not to mention the sound, is worth the extra cost. Plus, if you get the best....You can never be disappointed..
Perhaps this should be a whole new thread but of the 05' v10 and PSD which is faster both in stock form and with basic mods (exhaust, intake, chip or programmer). I will never tow anything with the truck I am hoping to buy but I want the fastest, hardest one I can get. Planning on running at least 39's in time. Any suggestions? Wannabe Atlanta Excursion Owner
I wouldn't go as far to say that short trips will be harmful to the truck but from what I have learned about my '05 so far is that yes, it is designed to work hard and you should work it regularly. The only issue I was told about was carbon buildup due to that darn egr which I was told to fix by doing my favorite thing... Yes, you guessed it ROMP IT!!! So if you want the 6.0 don't sweat it, get it! I can tell you they are fun to drive (love the sound when you mash it to the floor) .......

Big Lou....
there was a LONG contentious thread just over this subject....
some dubious logic, some outlandish claims, some challenges to "test" the premise on the road, and the concensus is....
there is no concensus...
The only thing I would suggest, is get what you want/need... they are both great for their uses....
Personally, I chose the 6-oh and got a $400 diablo predator that added 100+ hp and 260 lbft of torque....
Dyno sheet in my gallery showing rwhp on a HOT DFW day of 375HP and 720 lbft.....
to get that kind of boost out of the v10 would take thousands of dollars....
We have issued a challenge to ANY V10 owner to at least post their dyno numbers, track times, come have a head to head to settle it (all in fun (cuz I know the result without all the guesstimation)
but alas, none have responded....

JDAD, I know it's an old question but as I sit here with the anticipation of spending more money than I should in the first place, on a vehicle that I certainly don't need...I can only ponder. I am still leaning toward the 6.0 and assuming the bank agrees will get one while I am overseas. Our security has a fleet of uparmored X's and Subs and they are outta this world. Tons of electronics, armor, weapons platforms, and gee-whiz gear. Seeing these trucks work here has sold me. Now I just need to tighten my shot group on exactly which options I need.

No need to start a new thread, there are already two out there - one locked - that discuss this to death.
I bumped the active thread back to the top so you might have already seen it. The title is "No '05 V10 takers yet on my . . . "
Obviously most of us here in this forum bought the PSD and are pretty strong backers of it. I bought one and would buy another one over a gasser.
The question of which one is faster is a bit too broad, and ultimately I think a bit pointless. If you want something that really accelerates hard, buy a Mustang, or a sport bike, and if you want something with a lot of top end, there are certainly better choices out there.
If you want something that will tow a mountain and still go fast, then you are working at cross purposes because gearing choices to enhance towing will rob you of top end.
Anyway, rather than hijack this thread further it would probably be best to lump any new comments on this "faster" topic into the "No '05 V10 takers" thread.
Big Lou....
first !
What general area of the world ARE you in ?
if service - THANK YOU !!! It is VERY much appreciated....
Monday 11-01-04, I am going to meet and greet the troops on R&R at the airport to say thanks in person ....
Gentlemen, thank you for the input and my apologies for crossing threads. I am currently in Baghdad and will remain here until next Spring so I am trying to read all that I can on the X before I throw down and buy one. I appreciate all the info I have gotten here and JD, thanks for giving a crap. It's rare in this day and age.
My office is 4 miles from the house. The grocery store is 1.5 miles from the house. Daughter's dance classes are 6 miles from the house. Lotto tickets are 0.75 miles from the house, Off site meeting facility is 8 miles from the house, etc...etc...
With the exception of some bidness travel, trips to the property, and hunting trips all my miles are very local. My beast of a daily driver seems to have no problems with my driving conditions. That said, I do have occasion to blow out the system when a Duramess or similar Dodge product mistakenly decides to engage in a little vehicular fistacuffs....If you know what I mean.
I am sure that your trusted sales guy believes what he is telling you. But I would have to say that he is incorrect regarding short trips, traffic, etc.
This isn't the 1960s anymore and I think, or at least I really hope, that we have learned to separate supporting our guys over there from personal feelings as to whether or not we should have troops in a spot. They are there, support them.
I have friends and relatives over there too, best of luck and stay safe!
BigLou...
you'll find a LOT of people do care !!!
Just like we KNOW the media is not presenting it to us correctly,
you should also know that it's NOT presented correctly to you fine people either...
I won't go into tell you how I support your efforts so the anti-war issue doesn't detract...
but suffice it to say - you and your comrades are INFINETLY more important than this truck forum....
