Angry '74 300I6 replace with 360 or 400M

I found a '74 4x4 with a 300I6 and a NP435 (I believe) manual tranny. I want to junk the 300 and drop in the 360 out of my '76 with a manual NP435 or the 400M out of my '78 with auto tranny. Which is easier? I appreciate any ideas.

I would leave the 360 where it is and live with the 300-6 untill you find a 390 or if you can find a 460 to drop in. The problem is you probably have the small rad in the truck with a 300-6 I can't remember if you have to change the rad support to put the big block rad in.

As for putting the 400 in it will burn as much fuel as the 360 plus you will have to find a bellhousing for it to bolt the 435 to it.

I appreciate the input guys. I am leaning more towards the 360 since it is bolted to a 435 and will probably fit if I switch the bell housings. Kenworth, why would I want to find a 390, not much differance from a 360 is it? I am using a big radiatior off of a 79 with a 460 with the 360 so I can transfer that over. My 360 is rebuilt with about 5,000 miles on it and bored .30 over with a 4barrel holley and eddelbrock intake and cam. It's got plenty of power on top and bottom. A 460 would be nice but I already have money invested into the 360 so I will run it untill it blows. Let me know what you think.

The 390 has a longer stroke 3.78" and the 360 is 3.50" the 390 has 255hp and 376ftlbs the 360 is 215hp and 327 ftlbs both 2 barrels.

The 360 is heavy on the fuel the trucks dad had with 360s burned more fuel than his heavier F-350 dually flatdeck with the 390.

You maybe able to build a 390 out of the 360 if you change the crank and rods and heads as the bore is the same as the 390.

I was just on the FE engine forum earlier today. Apparently you can build a 390 out of a 360. They are the same block. Just need a 390 crank, rods and pistons. Double check on the FE forum.

One thing to check is the hose diameters and locations on your radiator to the motor...
