I was looking at getting a in dash DVD but I understand that they shut off when in gear. Is there a way around this before I drop 1300 for a system thank's Stephen
You need to ground the headunit properly. It depends on the brand, but the set up just needs to trick the unit into thinking the parking brake is set.
TN_Jeeper is right. I have a AVR-1005 Alpine head unit with external DVD. There is a sequence for this particular unit. There are two wires to "fool" into thinking the vehicle is not moving. The 1005 is tied into your brake light wire (+) and parking brake wire (-). The sequence is, apply the Foot Brake, While holding the foot brake, apply the parking brake, release the Parking brake, apply the parking brake (all done while the food brake is held) then release the foot brake. Then the unit will come up. If you need help, shoot me an E mail, I might be able to help. The AVR-1000, you only had one wire to worry about, the parking break ground wire. Good luck.
In order to make the steering wheel controls work again, an adapter is needed called a steering wheel interface. PAC audio makes one and you can get it through Logjam electronics. I know there is another adapter you can get to make the DVD screen operational all the time with no special pedal pushing. It comes from overseas for around 50 bucks and makes the in dash DVD work as it should. Local audio shops(not best buy or circuit city) have them and install them when asked by audiophiles, not soccer moms as it is illegal in some states to have the screen viewable by driver.
