Question what to do

alright, i have a older craig 4 channel amp and the thing won't turn on unless the power wire is hooked up to both the power, and the remote but that keeps it on even after the truck is turned off which drains my battery down to almost nothing . so i' wonderin what can i check, fix, replace. i really dont want to have to buy a new amp....i'm kinda low on the green stuff

thanks,
Bill

Try running your remote turn on lead wire to your fuse box and plug into a source that only turns on when you turn on the ignition or find a wire which only gets current when the ignition is on and tap into that.

Just a few thoughts

heres an update for ya guys......
ran the remote to the radio fuse in the fuse block
the amp itself is turning on but it is not getting any power to the subs and it does that with or without the remote hooked up and the power and protected lights stay on
with the remote hooked to both the power and the remote, the protected light turns off...what this means i have no idea

thanks for the help
Bill

Do you have an aftermarket headunit? If so, theres a Remote lead back there which you can use for the amp's Remote.

So if i understood your post correctly, your amp's Protection light stays on when you used the radio fuse for the remote, right?

Do you have a power cable run properly from the battery to the amp? The amp HAS to have current to operate. Do you have RCAs or speaker level connections to the amp from the HU? The amp has to get a signal from the HU to amplify. Keep the remote turn on lead and the power cable separate. They have nothing to do with each other. The remote lead does nothing but turn on the amp. It should be connected to a "switched" 12V source, meaning it will turn on the amp when the ignition switch is on. But the amp will never ever produce any output to the speakers without all the above. Are you sure the amp is good?

The amp is good! When your all that remote wire is 12 volts that turns on when the radio is on. Dude check the remote wire behind the radio to see if its hooked up or if there is something else that isnt working. Some times there is a fuse in the remote wire behind the head unit too. All I know your Amp is good.

If he has the stock HU there is no remote turn on "behind the radio". Like I said before, it can be connected to any "switched" 12V source. The easy and sensible place is the HU, if available, but it doesn't have to be. And how do you know his amp is good?

The amp is operating fine. Because that remote is just 12 volts that turns on when you run your radio. If you unhooked your remote on any amp and put a wire from the power cord to the remote hook up it will turn on. For some reason the remote isnt working at all. I would check the wires behind the stereo like i said. If its the head unit there is a simple ghetto route you can take is run a toggle switch to that constant power supply that goes to the remote so you can shut it off in the truck. The only down fall is remembering to shut it off. But i bet that it came un hooked behind the head unit or its the fuse behind the head unit on the remote wire. I had a girl friend that some nimrod never put a remote in her car and she had to run a wire from the power to the remote like he is talking about and she had to un hook it each time. One day i put a remote in and it shut off fine so the amp is operating fine.

Grease, Just because the amp powers on does NOT mean it's good. The output devices could be burned up from previous use and the amp could still come on. There's a reason the protect light stays on when it's wired correctly and it could mean the amp is bad.

Don't take the remote for granted (from the headunit wire). Personally I'd run another wire from the battery to a toggle switch, and then back to your amp. If that doesn't work, call a buddy up (assuming you have one with an amp) and try to see if their's works.
