Everytime I get a good hard rain my rear sliding window leaks. Talked with another owner, he experiences the same problem. I'm wondering if it could be mounting screws for the exterior light above the sliding window on the outside.
By the way, I really like the exterior light. I find it so handy early in the morning or at night. Makes loading and unloading much nicer. Even if I have to walk around the back of the truck it does a great job lighting up the area.
Mine too. The rear seat gets too wet to sit on sometimes. It makes the interior really musty smelling after a few weeks of cold wet weather.
Can't seem to find the actual leak.
mine to the foam seal just gets old dries out and doesnt seal anymore mines a small drop and it aint to bad but u have to remove the whole real window and get it resealed. not to cheap
I had mine leak. It was not a slider but the leak was from the passanger side corner. I had to remove the window to reseal it. I tried the silicone from the outside method but it does not work. To get it to seal you need remove the window which involves removing a lot of the interior, then use the proper urathane adhesive. It took me about 4 hrs. That included sliding my topper back and going to the parts store.
One more hint, it seems to leak on the passenger side of the window. Thanks for the hint Larry, I'll have to think twice before I remove the window though. I was thinking about going to a local auto glass replacement store. Just to see if they've run into this problem. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks.
This is a pretty common problem. Common enough that Ford has issued a TSB (technical service bulletin) with a recommended fix. The leak is typically from a hairline crack in the frame. The fix requires removing the whole window unit installing a special gusset seal (around $50 from dealer) and reinstalling the unit with new butyl rope. I did mine last spring and it hasn't leaked since. Took about three hours. If you search this forum there are numerous threads explaining the steps involved.
I have a 98 and had leaks soon after I bought it new. I looked into it and there were cracks in the frame at the mounting screw locations. The dealer replaced it with a new design window and has not leaked since.
where can you buy the replacement 3/8" butyl tape? I would like to seal mine too but was worried I wouldn't get a good seal. If I could get my hands on the product I think I could pull this off.
thank you
My 1997 f-150 rear slider leaked, took it into ford about 1.5 years ago and they did a leak test on it and said they had to replace the whole window. After $325 later I had a new rear slider (got to choose weather to have plain glass or factory privacy glass installed) of coarse I choose privacy which was cool because it just had plain glass in it before) and no leak
This something that is generally fixed for later models? I have a rear slider in my 2004 heritage. We've had some rain but I looked in the back and didn't have any leaks.
yeh when we ordered the truck we asked for no rear sliding window cause they were prone to leaking but they put it on there by addicent but since we had already gotten it about 4 months before anyone else in the country we went along with it.
I took a water hose nozzle to mine to check for leaks. No leaks but the plastic window frame is out of kilter and the rubber gasket thing around the edges is all buggered up. Why did Ford use this ugly window frame setup? I'm glad they dropped it on the newer trucks.
