I get into my 94 F-Superduty and it wouldn’t start. I turned the key and the wait to start light is lit, once it goes out I try to start and nothing. No clicking or anything. The truck starts if you jump the solenoid on the passenger fender. What could be wrong that has caused this to happen?
Something wrong with the little wire from your solenoid to the start switch on the steering column, check that to connection is not corroded on the solenoid, take the start wire off the solenoid, have a friend put a test light in it and go turn the key, if the light lights, then it is the solenoid. if it doesnt light then i dont know if it is fused somewhere or not, but the problem is definetly narrowed down
when you say jump it did you just touch a screwdriver from the power side of the solenoid to the start terminal or did you compleatly bypass the fender solenoid, could also be that it isn't pulling in.
if you did bypass it compleatly then i would guess that it is burned out inside.
just some of my guesses, although i am an electrician.
I jumped the solenoid by putting a screwdriver on the two big terminals. Also I went to my 95 that is also a PSD and a manual and didn't push the clutch in and it does the same thing as the 94. Push the clutch and it will crank right up. I don't know if maybe something may be wrong with switch on the clutch for the 94.
Sorry for the long time on the reply, I also work for the railroad and it preety sucks up my life . but I never thought of the clutch pedal switch being bad. you could try and bypass it and see if that works, soemtimes they stick and wont let the engine crank over. just pull the two wires off the clutch switch and connect them with a piece of 12 guage wire and see if that works, but make sure you replace the switch if it is bad, otherwise you will be able to start you truck with it in gear.
The problem was some wires were loose or cut. I don't exactly know what wires becuase I took the truck in after I replaced the starter selonoid and it still didn't start. Needed the truck ASAP and didn't have time to mess with it becuase I had lots of work to do. Thank you for your help.
Switch on the pedal is spring loaded and held in place over the clutch rod with a plastic clip. Its about an inch and a half long, slides in the botom of the switch paralel to the clutch rod. Mine fell out, didn't know what it was til it wouldn't start.
I bet its the clutch safety switch its a pain in the azz mine dangles under the dash with a bolt that holds the slide portion together so the contacts are in contact all the time. Occasionally it doesn't work so I have to take the switch and bang it against something and regains contact the key works again.
Oh ya my truck is a 89 F-Superduty with a old and slow IDI.
Do you need to have the clutch switch on the pedal "NO" you don't bypass it 70s and early 80s trucks never needed them why do these trucks need them.
