Hello all...I have a 1990 super cab Ranger STX, all of the STX markings are in pretty bad shape(cracking etc...) I'm wonderinf if there is any way to remove them and not the paint underneath, and what kind of condition the paint would be left in..
Well, if the decals are cracking then it is going to be much more difficult. But mainly to remove the decals you just need to get them warm by either putting your truck in the sun or using a hair dryer. Then you just need to start picking at them with you nails. If this works you will probly be left with a sticky residue so for this I would use goof off (but try it somewhere out of sight first)or any good quality residue remover. I have also seen a drill attachment that is just like an eraser for pin stripping. I believe eastwood specialty car tools would have this tool. One hint though to peeling off decals is to find an angle to pull the decal off at and to pull slowly. Also depending on the condition of your paint you should be able to tell if it isn't going to match because chances are the paint is going to look a lot newer. So take this into consideration too. I would try a small area out of sight first.
Unless the paint on the rest of the vehicle looks brand new, it will be very obvious where the decals were if you remove them. I had an '88 that was at one time a fleet vehicle, so it used to have decals on the doors. Even though the paint looked pretty good (except for the fact that it was pale yellow), with the slightest bit of dust on the doors you could easily see where the decals had been.
