I'm putting the cam in my shortblock for my rebuilt 351W, and I have run into two small issues.
1) There are two dowels in the cam box, I tossed the old cam so I'm not sure which one to use. One is about 5/8" long and one 1" or so. It just needs to engage the hold in the cam sprocket so eventually it will be trial and error but I'd like to not have to worry about replacing it later on.
2) How far do I tap in the rear cam bearing plug? Not even the Ford book has specs, but this will affect the cam end play if not installed correctly, yes? On the front there is a thrust plate but nothing on the back but the plug! I'm assuming that once the timing gear is in place the cam really isn't free to move backwards, but it still seems kinda strange. What keeps it from moving backwards in the block?
Yeah, apparently the search function came back. It seems like the installation of the cam sprocket keeps the cam from moving back and forth. Strange, but I guess it makes sense. Now I just need to figure out if I need to put any sealer on the plug at the back of the engine behind the cam and how far to tap it in.
Yeah, put some sort of sealer on the cam plug. You'll see a little chamfer on inside of the hole where the plug goes. Just tap the plug in until it is even with that.
And as far as the cam thrust plate, once you bolt the cam gear on, that is what holds the cam from going back and forth.
