An older toploader 4sp (mid -late 60s ford car and rancheros), and the T-18, T-19, and the NV-435 tranny, it doesn't matter what motor they came from (as long as they came from a ford) cause your bellhousing, clutch/pressure plate, and flywheel will work any any of those 4 tranny i mentioned.
It does matter what engine they came from. The FE series transmission, toploader, NP-435, have a shorter pilot shaft on the input shaft than the small block/300 6 trannys.
all it matters is that the transmission is from after 1964.
np-435 will definatly fit behind a 300, so with a t18, t19, zf-5 speed
the np435 in my bronco was originally behind a 360.
what counts as a smallblock/300 transmission? ford put 435s behind 300s from the factory

The length of the pilot shaft is longer on small block/300 then it is on an FE. I have transmissions, toploader and NP-435 of both variations. It will fit, but a FE transmission behind a small block will eventually wipe out the pilot bearing and then the input bearing on the trans. The ZF has bellhousing patterns (bellhousing part of the transmission, not a separate part) for 460. small block, and diesel applications.
My bad, i forgot about the FE motor having a different pilot shaft lenght. But his odds are that he will find a 4-sp from a small block, big block, or a cleveland series engine.
something to keep in mind with the zf 5 spd, is that the transmission must come from behind a small block-style engine...i.e. either a 351w, 300-6, or 302 (don't think there were any other small blocks available with the zf behind them)...anyway....just something to keep in mind....
they are all very easy to install, the toploader i installed into my truck was a direct bolt in including the mount and driveshaft. The same goes for the t-18/19 to my knowledge but i think on the ZF you need a different driveshaft.
