I will admit I am a packrat (anybody else here one too??) Anyway, my parents, especially my dad, cannot stand the fact that I have so much stuff laying around, and so he will stop complaining about it I am willing to get rid of some stuff. Can you give me any pointers as to get the stuff cleaned up without it being too painful on me. Any advise would be appreciated.
If you forgot you had it, either A throw it away, or B ebay it!!! I'm a packrat too. But I can usually remember evernything I had packed up, so it had to be useful.
Garage sale! That way you can make some money and buy more junk. Or donate the decent stuff to a charitable organization and then you get the warm fuzzy feeling because you helped someone.....
I use a couple guidelines for trashing stuff.
1. Will this someday be important to my kids? Something they'd like to say...'this was my dads?'
2. Something your parents would like to keep, 'hey, this was my sons?'
3. Someday, will it be of value enough to pay a semester or more of college?
4. Is it emotionaly important for you to keep it?
If none apply, sell it, donate it, trash it. If you dont, you will after lugging it thru a couple moves.

And DONT! I mean DONT share numero cuatro(number 4) with your wife. Please im beggin ya. Trust me...EVERYTHING is emotionally important.
Keep the stuff! Take it from a squirrel like me...don't throw the good stuff out. You ought to see my 50+ years of accumulation. My basement looks like the main warehouse at the Smithsonian. I'm waiting for the Antiques Roadshow to identify some high-buck thing that I might have one-of so I can retire. I have HotRod magazines going back to the 50's, the American Flyer electric trains I had as a kid, parts from cars I sold years ago, plus things most normal people never know existed. My wife saves cards that people have given her through the years, plus boxes of fabric and books. Try to neaten your collection up by buying those plastic tubs...it won't look as bad.
