I have a 429 with the C6 from a 69' Thunderbird. I would like to put this in a 1975 to 1980 F250.(If I can find one.) I would like to have 4wd. My question is does the 429 fit and how would the C6 mate up to the transfer case for 4wd. Did the F250 come with a big block, would I have to change the motor mounts, and would I have to get a different bellhousing. Also does the C6/transfer case combo require different driveshaft lengths.
I have totally rebuilt a 79 jeep CJ5 and I am confident of doing the work but for some reason I can not visualize the automatic hooking up to the t-case. Sounds silly but I have honestly never looked under to see an automatic hooked up to 4wd.
Not sure if the 429 has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as a 460 but I know that the C6 you have will not hook up to a transfer case. You need to get a 4wd transmission.
Yep the 429 and 460 are virtually the same motor (motor mounts and bellhousing) and it will fit in any 80's and newer ford truck, providing you have the 460 mount mount and motor mount towers. Your best best is to find a f-250 with a blown 460 (4x4) then pull the old motor aand bolt yours in. As for the C6, the tailhousing from a 4x4 truck with a C6 can be used to replace the current tailhousing, then you can bolt on the t-case of choice (generaly the one that came with the C6 will do just fine)
However the 460 never came in a pre 80's 4x4 for some reason, but you can swap in a 460, but i can't remeber what you do for motor mounts though, however if you go post that in the 72-79 forum you should get some help in there.
If you look at L&L products, they have kits that will let you swap a 460 into any pre-80's truck or Bronco. They have motor mounts, headers, whatever you need.
I dropped a 1973 460 in my 1984 F250 that came with a 351W by using old style 352/390 motor mounts.
By turning the mounts sideways and filing one hole slightly they fit the motor and frame like a glove. Also had to grind the frame slightly for oil filter clearance. You will need a rear sump oil pan, pickup and oil pump. I was lucky enough to find an old F350 ambulance for the alternator, power steering, AC, and fan shroud.
My truck was a stick (T-18) but I would think you could swap the 4WD C6 output shaft into your 460 C6 so it would mate to the transfer case.
